I have had problem toenails for years and doctors can't seem to tell me what the problem is. My middle toe on each foot is affected with a white substance growing under the nail which pushes the tip of the nail up as the white stuff grows. Recently a dermatologist scraped and tested the substance and he said it was not fungus. Many years ago I had a non-fungal problem with a toenail and a dermatologist prescribed a prescription strength alcohol applied every morning and an antibiotic ointment every night. It cured whatever it was. It's been so long ago I'm not sure if I had the same symptoms then. I no longer live in that city and the dermatologist is undoubtedly retired by now, as that was back in the early seventies. Any ideas anyone?

It could just be an overgrowth of skin cells - my right pinky toe does something similar to this. I just keep the nail plate cut short on that toe. It isn't fungal - it's just a 'skin' thing.
