I have been married 25 years and together with him for a total of 27 years. I have just been told that I have HPV. My husband did have an affair 5 years ago. Can HPV lay domint for 27 years or did he contract it 5 years ago and pass to me?

Hi theresafrank! It is entirely possible that you were exposed to this virus 25+ years ago and that it is just now being detected. Why? The test to detect HPV/dna was approved by the FDA only 4 or 5 years ago. Many doctors are just now (in the last 1-2 years) beginning to offer the HPV test while doing the well woman exam for women over 30 years of age.
I was exposed to high risk HPV at least 16 years ago, but was tested for the first time back in December. It came back positive, but I've never had a bad pap in my life. My doctor sent me to a gyn to have a colposcopy and an ECC (endocervical curettage). I'm sooooooo glad she did.
Anyway, I'm not sure what else to say right now, except to say that it is entirely possible that you were exposed to HPV decades ago and it is just now being detected.
