why if the virus was in my system for say many months or even years, did I develop the warts now?

I don't think there is a straight answer for that, at least I have not got one yet! I got warts after 16 years of being married and must have been infected over 16 years ago, but never had any other symptoms until the warts. I was told it can lay dormant and weaking of the immune system can bring "out" HPV symptoms. What treatments are you going to have done? Make sure to get them treated!

All *I* can say is "yep" to what andi said. It is an evil virus. It doesn't always show up right away. :(
