 I am looking for some input on my stepson. He is forty years old and just skating through life. He is always easy going, but he doesn't appear to care about anyone or anything. Every year or two he will have some sort of totally avoidable financial crisis from which he will need help. He has spent the past week staying with my husband and I while we were getting him back on his feet and it seems to me that he has zero passion for anything. Not even for superficial things like belongings, let alone for interests. His parents say that he did well in school and was also a star high school football player.

I just found out today that he was crosswise of some pretty rough characters about 10 years ago and four or five men beat him and nearly killed him. After that he was in the hospital for a long time and did finally recover. I am wondering if this horrible event could have caused mental issues, such as depression or post traumatic stress. I was considering trying to get him to a psychiatrist for a mental workup. Does anybody out there have any understanding of this – Am I way out in left field or could there be some kind of connection?

Thanks.

Hi kkumabear,

Yes it is very possible that he would get depression or PTSD from an event such as you described - if he would see one it may be an idea to ask him to see a counciller or psychologist or is there someone he trusts that could sound him out. I hope things work out for you and him.

Take Care
