Hi, I think I have HPV. After doing some research on the net, I don't have much symptoms of STD's except HPV.

My question is, I just had a pap/hpv test in August. And everything is fine. Am I to assume that I would have had to contract the virus from then until now? Or could I have had it for a long time, and test negative.

I noticed 2 small wart like bumps on my vagina a few days ago. I took a mirror and noticed irritation, the two bumps, and discharge. Obviously this is not comforting. I did have the Gardasil Vaccine Sept 29th. I just dont know WHEN I could have gotten the virus? Also when I scraped the 'wart' it bled. Is this sounding like HPV?

I am young, and i read your body can fight it off within a few years. I also read that the HPV that causes warts is considered low risk... and not the kind that causes cancer. Is this true?

I have an OBGYN appt on thursday, but I wanted to be informed before I get there.

Just because you have a normal pap does not mean you do not have HPV. I've always had normal paps (I'm 38 years old) and had developed warts and had them removed last year with continuing issues. I don't believe they automatically test you for HPV with a pap, the HPV test and a pap are seperate types of testing.

The virus can lie dormant for weeks, months or years-----even the strain/s that cause warts. I was infected 16+ years ago before I had any symptoms. The vaccine does not protect you from all strains, it actually only protects you from a few strains.

I never had any discharge with the warts, I don't believe that is one of the symptoms but I could be wrong. But the wart type areas sound like HPV.

Yes your body may fight off the virus (being young a big plus), many people's bodies are able to rid the virus itself but a few don't and continue to have problems. Low risk is not linked to cancer but I will share my experience real quick. I had warts (believe they were there for some time before treated), at last pap appointment the Nurse Practitioner did not check the vulva area (area between vagina and anus) and I think I had them then. Anyhow, I had them removed last year and it was biopsied----results came back VIN III (precancerous cells, severe dysplasia). I've had more treatments and frequent appointments to follow up----colposcopies and acid (vinegar solutions) tests to see if abnormal areas. I have had another area found through the acid test (the area turns white), it was removed and VIN III again. So now it's wait and see again. So with this drawn out story you can get cancer in the genital areas as well; vulva, vaginal area, anal area, etc. I'm not trying to scare you but want you to be aware that there are many different scenarios.

There is some great information at the Center for Disease control that may provide you information you need. Good luck and I hope your appointment goes well!

it did turn out being genital warts. she did take other swabs to be sure of not additional infections.

i think the most frustrating thing about it...is you really have no idea where it came from and whom! frustrating. She says i could have had it for years... and maybe had a wart that never bothered me, and now i have a few that are irritated.

She gave me the topical treatment to try first. She says my case is very mild, and i need to keep up with the treatments.

So i guess it could have been worse... but still... they are uncomfortable for sure!

im interested how your warts were cancerous.. because they say the hpv that causes warts, do not cause cancer. hm. interesting!

Hi Cali, the warts were not cancerous and do not cause cancer. The tissue underneath and around the warts were changed because of the HPV, the virus can cause dysplasia (normal cells to change to abnormal cells). I do not have cancer, it is precancerous (severe dysplasia) and needs close monitoring by my doctors. Hope that makes sense. Is the cream helping or did you just start it? Hope you are doing well!

it looks about the same, she said it could take a few weeks to see the healing.
