Tryingfor#2 06-10-2003, 07:38 PM Heres a question for you all...have any of heard that weight can play a factor in getting pg?? I have read that but never actually asked dr about it??? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif Sponsor Boundi 06-10-2003, 07:43 PM Yes I have heard on several occasions that being too big or too small can play a factor in acheiving pregnancy. MaryAnn1970 06-10-2003, 07:46 PM I just lost 50 lbs thinking that was my problem..... come to find out yesterday, that having diminished ovarian reserve has nothing to do with weight. It depends on the individual. I have read that it does cause problems for some. Are you concerned that you are overweight or underweight? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Tryingfor#2 06-10-2003, 07:54 PM Right now the dr is not starting me on any meds, but sending DH to urologist tomorrow due to his probs. they want to focus on that 1st, but I do wonder if me being a chunky monkey could be making things worse. I got really sick for about 3 years and was on a lot of diff drugs/antibiotics, due to continuous staph infec. and then a colon cancer scare which turned out to be something else so I gained about 45 lbs. because of always having to keep food in my stomach w/ meds. It stinks that is for sure....The dr has never mentioned it to me, so I guess it would be safe to assume that if it was a concern he would have brought it up by now right?! owenville 06-10-2003, 08:17 PM Hi trying - I'm 5'4", weight about 207, give or take. Never have has my doctor or specialist told me to be concerned about this. Some people with EDs (eating disorders), whether it's anorexia, bulimia, or bingeing, may have a problem with their cycles (for example, some anorexics get to a point where they lose their periods completely), but unless you have been told this is an issue for you, don't be worried about it. I was actually terrified to see the specialist for the first time, because that's what I was expecting to hear, "Well no wonder you can't get pregnant, you're so FAT!" but no - my weight never came up in conversation at all. I totally get your concern, but hope this helps to allay some of your fears http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif. Most important? Just be healthy - no matter WHAT your size or weight http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif. Thinking fertile thoughts for you... MaryAnn1970 06-10-2003, 08:21 PM I felt pretty comfortable just coming right out and asked hey is my weight a problem..... I actually felt better knowing that my being "thick" wasn't a problem. My regular OB/GYN said to me 5 years ago, lose weight and come back! THAT BIT**! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/mad.gif mommawannabee 06-10-2003, 08:31 PM LOL! MaryAnne - being thick! You're adorable! Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 12:58 PM Thanks for all the input...maybe I should just relax and focus on the things that are really there and have been discussed huh?! I am probably the biggest stress case when it comes to this subject I swear! Thanks again http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/heart.gif MaryAnn1970 06-11-2003, 01:07 PM We're all big freekin' stress cases when it comes to this subject, thats why we all get along soooooo well. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I think about fertility 24/7!!! I question every twinge and twange in my belly area!! Did I ovulate.... did the follie get stuck and it's not coming down... maybe it's a cyst.... OMG i'm going crazy!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 01:37 PM Doesn't it suck, it consumes my life...my DH does not get it...he thinks I should just chill and let things happen, maybe I should but it sure as hell isn't that easy!! How does your DH do w/ your feelings on this??? tazink 06-11-2003, 01:44 PM tryingfor#2 ~ I don't know how much of that I believe, I am 5'8 and weighed 115 lbs. when I got pg with my daughter. My sis has always been on the heavy side and is fertile mertyle. I think docs just say that when they don't want to put the effort in to find the real problem! MaryAnn ~ I would have punched that Byutch of a doc if she said that to me! The nerve of some people. Taz Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 02:14 PM Thanks Taz, and I agree w/ you on her dr, that is just plain mean! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif [This message has been edited by Tryingfor#2 (edited 06-11-2003).] Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 02:22 PM Hey owenville, I didn't see a post from you on the keeping it straight thread, if you don't mind me asking...I was wondering what was your story (stats)?? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif MaryAnn1970 06-11-2003, 05:10 PM TAZ & TRYING I was sooooooo pissed when she told me that. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/mad.gif Basically she was giving up on me and getting pregnant. That's the worst feeling ever!!!! I 've since switched to another OB/GYN she's fantastic! She would never say that sh** to me. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif fillorbust 06-11-2003, 05:12 PM Hi Yes, excess weight can play a big part in not getting pg depending on the situation. Being overweight can cause insulin levels to rise, which in turn cause elevated androgens(male hormones) which stop the ovaries. Fat cells also produce estrogen, which makes your body think it's on "birth control". I know that in PCO(polycystic ovaries)it can cause problems! Been there, done that. The cysts on the ovaries produce hormones too. That is why RE's will "zap" the cysts during a Laparoscopy. It is to reduce the amount of hormones floating in your system so the ovaries can function properly. You may want to ask your doc if weight is an issue in your case. For mine, it is a slight issue. I can attest to that firsthand! I sure hope this helps. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 05:48 PM delete [This message has been edited by Tryingfor#2 (edited 06-11-2003).] Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 05:49 PM Sorry about the duplicate posts, comp is dumb http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/mad.gif [This message has been edited by Tryingfor#2 (edited 06-11-2003).] Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 05:51 PM Sorry again... http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/mad.gif [This message has been edited by Tryingfor#2 (edited 06-11-2003).] Tryingfor#2 06-11-2003, 05:53 PM Thanks all, every bit of info helps. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/heart.gif Mindoo 06-11-2003, 06:49 PM Tryingfor2, Fillobust is correct. Weight can plan a factor if you have PCO. She wrote the reply much getter than I ever could have. Mindy owenville 06-11-2003, 10:42 PM Hey there - I'll post my stats on the KEEPING EVERYONE STRAIGHT thread, which I think is still alive and kicking http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif! kateisboo 06-12-2003, 12:44 AM Underweight can be a problem too (too little fat - too little hormones) I run and my RE told me not to do it TOO much... KKisme 06-12-2003, 11:03 PM I asked my RE if I was having probs because I was too fat (thanks to progesterone supps) - she told me NO! I knew I liked her for a reason! She said the same thing - quick gains and losses will effect fertility but as long as your cycles are regular - it shouldn't be a problem. Tryingfor#2 06-12-2003, 11:12 PM Thanks K, I think I like her too, any dr. that doesn't point out the chub issue is cool with me...lol http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif tazink 06-12-2003, 11:31 PM Iknow that women who are competive athletes and there body fat gets down to like 5 or 6 they won't get AF and won't ovulate but I have never been anywhere near that # so I don't gotta worry about that too much. TAZ Tryingfor#2 06-12-2003, 11:35 PM Oh Taz I feel that, I wasn't born with a number that low...lol Just call me the Chunky Monkey http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif |
