No I don't think so. But there are many effective treatments available for the different problems that PCOS causes. Glucophage, birth control pills, Clomid, etc.

I don't think there is either, I've never heard of one. Its almost in the diabetes family, so we probably need to pray for a cure to diabetes first.

No there is no cure but Glucophage is a start if you are insulin resistant. Injectables work well (much better in pcos patients) than clomid. Clomid is athe least expensive but the only thing it did for me and alot of women i have heard from is give maybe one follicle, huge cyst, and mood swings out the ying yang. The way my RE (she contucts studies on infertility patients (i was in a study for pcos patients) During your cycle we (pcos pts) start producing FSH but before the follicles can mature enough the LH takes over before the follicle is mature and we stop producing FSH thus leaving us with an unmature follicle and month after month this happens thus giving us numerous small cyst on our ovaries giving them a swiss cheese looking appearence. I took the Follistim and Antagon Combo the follistim matured my follicles while the Antagon supressed the LH until the follicles were mature enough and the dr gave me the shot to release the follicles. Best of luck in your treatment IT IS A ROLLER COASTER RIDE http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/blob_fire.gif

PCOS is a syndrome characterized by obesity, lack of ovulation, excessive hair growth, insulin resistance, high androgen levels, ance, hair loss. It results from abnormal levels of certain hormones. It can't be cured, but it can be managed by birth control pills, progesterone, or infertiltiy drugs. If you are insulin resistant, doctor's could reduce your insulin levels with glucophage (metformin). If the insulin hormone doesn't work properly, you body will produce too many angrogen hormones which block the development of the follicle.
It my case, I am somewhat obese, I don't ovulate, I lose some hair, and I have high androgen levels. However, I'm not insulin resistant.
Even with PCOS patients, we all respond differently.
Flowergirl described how she responded. I respond differently to clomid. It has developed 3-5 large follicles each time I have been on it. It also keeps my cycle regular for 2-3 months after the month I took it. My doctor does not want to give me injectibles without doing IVF because they feel the risks of 3 or more babies or overstimulation is too high in my case.
Cysts are always a problem. However, in the 18 months I've been on (and off) clomid, I've only had problems with cysts the last two month.
Good Luck finding the answers you are looking for.

"Anyway I missed me cycle this month ... but I have been on birth control for so long I just stopped in November and everything was fine untill now. please tell me if anything I sad sounds familier"
This is almost my story exactly. I was on the pill for 11-12 years with only one break. My periods never restarted on their own. They put me on progestorne to induce them, but they never told me I had PCOS until my fertiltiy work-up. BCP is one of the treatments for PCOS. Fertility drugs are another.
I think your dermatologist is excellent. He made some good observations by sending you to an RE.
BTW, did you stop bcp because you are ttc or is there another reason? I initally stopped because at age 30 my hormones must of started changing, and bcp was causing many problems that hadn't occured when I was younger. It was about a year after I stopped, that we actually started ttc (ovulation testing, temps, etc.)
Good Luck with your first appt.

Hi there - nope, no cure for PCOS. I have the classic polycystic ovary, but yet I'm not overweight, my testerone levels are fine and all of those other factors don't apply to me - my FSH and LSH are off though- my wonderful RE who is going to help bless us with a baby tells me that I'm a "special" case cuz the only thing I'm lackin' is that signal to my brain that allows my egg to release. I have issues with the lining of my uterus too, so I wonder if that ties into the whole egg thing. Hope you get all the answers and help you need!

I think that I have pcos because of the changes I am now facing after I stopped my bcp I stopped becasue we were ttc and for the first few months dec. jan. feb. things were fine but now I started to think of how things were before the bcp and I realize there may be a problem. I was also was curious as to why my derm was sending me to an endorine doc. becasue I had never heard of one before. Things are really difficult for me now. My acne is getting worse and my flo has still not come but I am staring to spot and I am not preg. becasue my tests were all negative so I am just clueless now. And a bit scared. I want children and I am so tired of problems. My husband has a child so he is not that stressed as I am but.... loss for words now I am getting sad so on a bright note I am so happy for all of the info. My husband thinks that I don't have any problems that everything is in my head but I have a strong feeling that something is not right and the more I hear about pcos I am seeing myself.

It was horrible it was the worse emotional roller coaster of not knowing what is going on. I Left work early to go for the appointment and they told me a doctor called out so they were closing the office. I was so upset. I made anouther app. for Friday. I am spotting but my flo is still not here after going on two months.

Hi! I was diagnosed with PCOS Feb 2002 because of my irregular periods. My doctor gave me BCP and Clomid. I tried clomid for 2 cycles but it gave me a lot of mood swings. I was reacting positively to it though because I was producing a lot of follicles.
After the TTC Roller Coaster ride, I decided to leave everything to fate. I started taking herbal supplements and Multi-Vitamis. I started going to the gym too. I went to my doctor Feb 2003 for a check up and she said that my ovaries are normal and I am ovulating on my own...according to the Ultra Sound. I am having my periods now regularly. I really don't know what I did to make this happen.
I took Evening Prim Rose Oil 1000 mg
GNC Women's Mega Vitamins
Ampalaya tablets

I was also taking a weight loss pill before I started ttc. My doc told me I had to be off all other meds when we started ttc. You might want to talk to your doc about the weight loss pill.

HI Everyone. This is my first time posting in this board so I will briefly explain my situation...
I am 30 years old TTC for almost seven months. My doctor recently diagnosed me with pcos just by his instint. My blood work came back fine but because I am irregular, acne, hair growth he feels I should go on Clomid. I am soo nervous about Clomid only because he really didnt check ouot any other possibilitites, it was like an easy out for him to prescribe it.
Is this normal? SHould he have done more a extensive check up first? When on Clomid will I experience any side effects?
Any advice on this would be apprecited!I am driving myself nuts thinking about this!

Hi Kim,
Have you had a blood test called "Hemoglobin A1c" which will show if your blood sugar is under control or not?
To simply prescribe clomid tells me that your doc is
probably a Fertility specialist and not a GP.
(Do you like spending a lot of money?)
If you are infertile, it will regress as you loose weight, control your blood sugar and as your insulin requirements decrease.
Yes! the excess body hair will also disappear in six months or so, as will your acne and excess hair loss.
If your voice has deepened it may sound cute but it is a sign of masculinizing hormones that you want to
be rid of. (Then you will sound more like Pamela)
Irregular, painful periods and cysts on your ovaries
will also be a thing of the past when male hormones do not affect your female cycles so severly.
This string has been fairly quiet lately, so i hope you get a few more comments.
If not, I hope what I have relayed is of some help.
Ron

I was the original person with the post and after being diagnosed with PCOS my doc put me on glucophage. and also told me to excercize and loose weight and tha will be the best help. I was also curious as to why clomid was not prescribed to me but I guess I have to wait. The doc told me to take this med from 3-6 months depending on the results. I want a baby but I want to be helth. I hope this helped feel free to ask any questions.
