It's a simple procedure to put one of these in and is usually used for flatfoot or PTTD that does not respond to orthoses and braces. Should not be done by itself, usually need to do other procedures in addition to it or it's not tolerated well as it has to control the motion of the subtalar joint all by itself and usually hurts. The good thing is that if it doesn't work or is not tolerated they are simple to remove and doesn't do any permanent harm. There are a few of them on the market. Do a search - subtalar joint arthroeresis and you should find some info.

Thank you so much for your reply - it just confirms my research. The procedure should not be done alone, particularly at my age (60). My podiatrist, who otherwise has an excellent reputation, suggested that I have the implant. However, a local othopedic surgeon & my MD both advised against it. Unfortunately, the wait times to even get an appointment with a good orthopedic surgeon here, is anywhere from 1 1/2 yrs. to 2 yrs.! A long time to suffer!
