My DD is 8 months old and still does not have any teeth. The book I am reading says at this age, she should be starting to self feed on finger foods. We just tried the Gerber (the ones that melt in the mouth) and she didnt do to well...seemed a little confused and coughed a few times, so now I am afraid to try them...

Is there anything else I can try? Someone recommended macaroni noodles, as long as I overcook them and make them soggy. Do I have any other options?

Maybe try some very ripe, soft fruit like banana, cut up into small pieces. She might like that because it's soft to begin with. I'd also try the puffs again in a bit, she was probably just confused about the whole buisness and that's why she didn't care for them. Most babies love those, once they get the hang of chewing!

The first finger food my son had was the Gerber Wagon Wheels. He's allergic to the puffs, so these were pretty much the only option. They're too big for them to really get the whole thing in their mouth and even if they do, its not going to go down far enough to choke. So, they pretty much have to gnaw on them and let them dissolve. He got these around 7-8 months old and they were about the only finger food he got for a couple months. Then we advanced to things like Gorilla Munch Cereal (like KIX), Beech Nut Table Time fruit dices, diced chicken, diced vegetables, small pieces of rice bread, etc. Really, once they get down the idea of chewing (even without teeth), then you can give them anything cut into appropriate size pieces. My son didn't have any teeth when he started on finger food and only 1 when we branched out to all tables foods instead of purees and finger foods.

We started with the cookies that melt in their mouth, and puffs. Also try canned fruit or vegetable (carrot slices, green beans), because they are good and soggy. Bananas are a very good one like whiskers said. Cereal bars are nice and soft, just make sure they have no nuts or strawberries. Mashed or boiled/ baked potatoes are Grace's favorite.

Just keep trying. I have a 10 month old and when we first introduced finger foods she would gag and choke. I think they just need to learn it's not a liquid form like their formula and they have to chew a little bit. Now my dd will eat anything we put on the tray. Don't give up. Yogurt melts are really good too.....
