Hi i have been diagnosed with having anxiety attacks, started about 2 months ago. No i have always had a bit of a problems with my bowels, maybe its IBS doctors have never done anything about it. But recently with these anxiety attacks i have convinced my self i have something seriously wrong with my bowels....its making my anxiety worse. I am off to my gp on friday, i am just wondering if maybe i get my bowels checked over and they find nothing wrong then maybe i will be able to deal with my anxiety a wee bit better....anybody elses thoughts would be most welcome

Hi, Fiona . . . I have both anxiety and IBS (anxiety since a teen and IBS for over 20 years). I know how they can bounce off of each other. If you get anxious, it can aggravate your stomach acids to irritate your bowels (I often get diarrhea or sticky stools) and sometimes even cramping. The sensations that you are going through with your digestive tract can make your anxiety worse because it is always in your head that there is something more going on.

My doctors have never done anything for my IBS either as it is considered to be one of the most benign bowel conditions. I am able to control mine by knowing what food ingredients trigger it and avoid those, and if I can keep my anxiety down, I am fine.

Let us know how your doctor appointment goes!

Fiona...I can tell you that bowel issues are extremely common with those suffering from anxiety. I don't think bowel issues cause anxiety but these events do cause you to be super-sensitive to what you eat, environment, etc. I've had that for years, always being super-sensitive to what I eat given what the occasion is (<BUSINESS> meeting vs at home).

The anxiety is a bigger issue. Please talk to your doctor about options and get a recommendation for a therapist. Had I not had a great therapist I swear I would be lost.

Best of wishes to you!
