Hello, everyone,
Has anyone ever used a light box for this dark time of year? My pdoc mentioned it to me today, and I never tried one. Any successes with one?
Best to everyone, hope we can all hang in there with all this greyness and darkness,
Seaturtle

Hi Seaturtle,
I've never used a light box before, but my tdoc suggested I use one when I saw him last week.
Do you (or anyone else) know where light boxes can be purchased?
In the meantime, I'm keeping all of my lights on in the apartment when it's cloudy so it helps elevate my mood some.
Feel better soon!

Greetings, neon,
I asked around. There are companies that sell them, but they are expensive. Someone I spoke with today said there are special full-spectrum light bulbs you can put into just any lamp. Here, they are apparently available at the health food store. I haven't looked elsewhere for them.
As far as I know, it has to be this full-spectrum light, not ordinary bulbs, though given the darkness of the past week, having all my lights on would have been a mood-raiser. Unfortunately, my electric bill mitigates against that!
Best to you, will let you know if I find another source.

Thanks for your reply, Seaturtle!
I'm going to talk to my tdoc and pdoc to find out if they have any resources as to where full spectrum light bulbs can be found.
For now though, I'll do an Internet search to see if I can come up with anything.
Thanks for your best wishes! :)

I've never heard of them, of course when I'm depressed like I am now....I tend to go around shutting all the blinds and just making the apartment dark. My son is at his dad's for the 2nd weekend in a row, and this is the hardest part to get used to. Being alone, and then rainy cold weather, plus the dampness is causing the knee pain to get worse, so it's just all a recipe for getting down in the dumps very quickly.

Kat -
Hey, girl, I'm sorry you're feeling so crappy. Your pain must make the depression all that much more difficult.
Anyone you can call/invite over/go out with this weekend? Being with someone might help. The light boxes - for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (a psychiatric term for what happens to everyone in darkness of winter, I think), being exposed daily to the equivalent of day light has proven to lessen depression.
You know, I read something in Kabatt-Zinn's "Living the Full Catastrophe." He was talking about when we're ill or incapacitated in any way. Our worlds narrow, as does yours with being inside and without your son. His point of view was to stay in the moment you're in, look around, and realize that just as things are right now, there is enough fullness, if we only look around and take in what is there, not what's not.
I'm going on, sorry, but that's helped me a lot sometimes, just something I wanted to pass on. Don't know if you're in a place where you might be able to try it.
Didn't mean to write a novel here. I'm thinking of you, your son will be back, so hang in there and find something good to do for YOU. You deserve it.

Hi,
My pdoc told me of a company that lends them out. You just pay the shipping, around $30 for large ones, $20 for small, and you keep and use them for the winter.

Seaturtle,
Speaking of light boxes, I have a question. I'm totally blind and am wondering if I could get the same benefits of using a light box by feeling the warmth of the light on my skin?
I'd like to purchase a light box, but if it's not going to work because I can't see it, then I won't waste my money.

Hi, neon,
I don't know, but I will research it on the Net and let you know what I find out.
You cope with blindness to? Gotta hand it to you, you're quite a person.
