When I was diagnosed with BPD, I was put on Lithium along with lamitcal and clonapin. About 1 year ago I weaned myselp off of the lithium and have found myself to feel so much better. When I informed my doc, he said I shoud stay at least on 2 per day. Well, I tried this but felt so space out that I stopped that as well. So, now my blood test is coming up and I really don't want to take it again. Quetion, if I take a couple of pills a few days before the test, will it give a level of at least somewhat normal. I know I should tell him but I just can't. He can't believe how much better I'm doing and I know it's because I'm off the meds. Someone please help!

Hi there,
I personally think that you need to be honest with your pdoc, ok he has been prescribing lithium.......but why on earth should you tie yourself up in knots trying to give him blood results that imply that you have been taking it. Whats the worse that could happen if you told him the truth? Medication regimes are a put forward by the pdoc, but if you feel that the side effects outweighed any benefit then that is a valid argument, treatment is a joint venture between you and the pdoc.
Just tell him that you have stopped it, ............if you are doing well without it then ok you will probably get the speech that it was the lithium that has made you well and the chances of relapse are ?% in 6months then tell him you hear him and that you are willing to take the chance but if you do relapse then you give him your best promise to be compliant in the future.
When my pdoc or GP asks if i am taking my meds I simply say yes but in a combination of use, abuse or lose coz thast what i do, I either take them as prescribed, take more than prescribed or less depending on my mood.............it throws them a little but it is an honest answer. Just my 2pennies worth. whatever you decide I hope it works out for you and that you remain to feel well.:)

I would always be 100% honest with your pdoc, if not why even bother going to him??? Just explain to him that the Lithium didn't work for you, how it made you feel, etc. If you think you need something else in it's place, then talk to him about that, but don't lie to him and let him think you're still taking it. What if an emergency where to come up at his office and you had to be transported via ambulance?? He'd tell them you were on Lithium....Just my opinion.
