I have been on pain medication for 3 years...He had mentioned several times
about taking me off of what I was on...I felt it had run it's course because I
had pain in my legs and joints...Medications had caused a lot of water retention and swelling, and caused my legs to have more pain....I looked up Vicodin
and it is dangerous...I was on Tramadol..Actually Tylenol 3 does me more
good..Aspirin is the best, but unfortunately no one can take much
Aspirin....Thank you!

why would my doctor prescribe vicodin

Vicodin is a very powerful analgesic that is considered to be more powerful than oral morphine. The combination of hydrocodone and paracetamol (acetaminophen) makes the medication stronger.

Yor doctor may have perscribed it because you are showing signs you are in a lot of pain. (Due to the fact this is a heavy duty medication)

There are many different doses of Vicodin, so you would first figure out your correct dosage.

However, there are quite a bit of side effects of this medication. You, and only you can do this, have to weigh the pros and cons of taking Vicodin to see if it's viable for you.

Best wishes.

Everybody reacts differently to different medication, so I hesitate to pass along this information. If this particular medication works for an individual, I would never tell them to stop taking it.

In vicodin/hydrocodone's case, it has a unique relationship with fibromyalgia. I'm no scientist, so I'll explain this the best I can. Vicodin works by binding itself to pain receptors within the brain, thus putting an end to the pain sensation in the typical patient. In a fibro patient, the drug interaction never takes place, the chemical never binds itself to the receptor, and never ceases the pain of the patient, yet it still delivers all the side effects.

Personally, I was taking it appx. 6 years ago, and it was very much a placebo effect for me. I could take 4 hydrocodone pills and feel absolutely nothing. I never knew why, until recently discovering the science that I mentioned above.

Like I said, if it does indeed work for a person, then I am more than happy. But, to the best of my understanding, it does not agree with the typical fibro patient. Use caution when administering this drug, and all my best wishes to you!

You woud be prescribed vicodin for pain. It is very under used in the many articles that I have read. There's a stigma that comes with any of these painkillers. When I started with this whole pain thing many years ago a doctor really didn't give you this stuff unless you were dying. I'm glad that they are becoming more acceptable. It always throws me into a tiz when people think you shouldn't take these things, but don't like to see animals suffer. I know people that take them and feel normal, not doped up and have been able to go back to work. I don't feel doped up when taking it either. I have it and morphine when I need it. I use it sparingly. If I take to my bed with a headache my stimulator doesn't stop or a bad flare, it's heaven sent to me. For me when I take it I feel like what I can come close to remembering what normal was. Now for the reason I use it so sparingly. As long as I am lying down I feel alright, but if I'm up for longer than 10 minutes or so it gives me nausea really bad. I have an anti-nausea medicine that I take with it, but like I said it's okay as long as I'm lying down. All the medicines like Tramadol, Ultram, etc. do nothing for me pain wise, but mess up the whole GI tract.

I like this site because you get so many views. We are the same in so many ways, but not the same too. I think it's up to each individual to choose what's best for them.

I wish you all a pain free day

I want to thank all of you for your kind answers...Yes, in many ways
we are alike, and then we have different issues and results.
I was to take 3 500mg a day.....I took 1 morning, 1 afternoon,
and felt nothing at all....The pain was still there, in fact worse
because I had no pain relief in my body...I could not stand on my
feet...I read on the internet that there is more side effects, then
good...I worked in the medical field for many years, and I did learn
this, what is good for one patient, is not always good for another...
So in my case, it did nothing...I felt nothing...I suffered through
the evening and night...I got up the next morning and I took a
Tylenol...and got a little relief...Before vicodin, temporarily, he put me on Tramadol, but it caused me more pain then took it away...
So I am wondering with this strong medication, does the doctor
think it doesn't matter what he gives me..I am an old lady!
I am honestly disgusted with the medical field, and I do believe
that pharmaceuticals should stay out of doctor's business and let the
doctor learn about these drugs, instead of depending on the
pharmaceuticals to explain what the medicine will do! It only reinforces more money for pharmaceutical companies and the heck with the people...My doctor is going to get an ear full when I
see him this week...Thanks to all of you, and have a Nice
Thanksgiving....and I hope and pray you are not alone....

DeBeach and bevann's responses are perfect examples of what constitutes the fibro patient. It is normal for a person to experience different types of different medications in different ways, but with fibromyalgia that concept is taken to a higher level. Even our most common symptoms may widely vary from one another. This is why I stress that I never try to mess with another person's medication regimen, even when it comes to caffeine, something I think no person should be taking! At the same time, I realize if you were to go without caffeine, some folks would suffer greatly. I am genuinely happy that vicodin works for some folks, and equally concerned when it does not work for another. All we can do is share our experiences and learn from one another. You both are very helpful in this discussion.

Mshill, I completely agree with everything you said relating to the relationship between the pharmaceutical industry and the medical field as a whole. I am beyond exhausted with dealing with these sort of things, but I will never stop fighting until I find answers for all of us. Not for me, but for all of us. The only person who knows whats best for you as an individual is The Self. Keep yourself in mind and don't let doctors push you into anything you don't want to be a part of. Be sure to give that doctor an earful, but make sure you present it in a clear-cut manner and don't come off as angry, they will just write you off if you speak to them in a menacing tone.

Your hopes and prayers that we are not alone are well-intended and in good faith. None of us are ever alone, we have folks like yourself to thank for that! Best of luck with your doctor visit and best of wishes to your health and well-being.

Thank you so very much for your input SD83....I will do exactly
what you say.....He has given me many medications in the past
that has not agreed with me. He agreed here while back to
take me off of one, and the next time he wanted me back on it
and gave a reason...I came home and called him and explained
that it makes my legs and feet swell and then I am unable to
walk...He argued with me..I told him I thought he was professional
enough to except my reason for not wanting to take it, saying
I am walking with a cane when I am taking it...There is no call
for it....I am not asking for some heavy drug, but something in the
medical realm that will help me with my pain....Why is it they
give these exotic drugs, when a simple pain reliever will help...
Over the counter medications are ok for casual use, but for
every day, I am not sure about taking them....
I still say the pharmaceutical companies have such a hold on
these doctors and something needs to be done...I never in my
life time ever feared my doctor....But I do now....and I don't have
much choice in changing...There is not many doctors here in this
area...They go by the quota system, and allow only so many
in our area....So the doctors are over booked most of the time,
and getting a new one is very hard to do unless you go to the
next town...At my age...I am tired of fighting them.....
Thank you so very much....I sure have used this as a sounding
board against doctors...I really believe there is a lot of good ones
out there, but finding one is very difficult!
