Hi ladies,

My ds just turned 18mo, we had his checkup a week and a half ago and although there was some discouraging news (about prior allergies, and a couple other things), he seems to be in good health. Anyways, I mention this because his doctor did open up his diaper, and check things out in there, and said that he has an undecended left testicle which he needs an ultrasound done on, but otherwise, everything looked ok.

So, last night, he was walking around here with a diaper that needed to be changed (wet, and he had just had a tiny poop) and was seemingly incredibly uncomfortable, because he kept squatting (which is the position he assumes normally, when he's going to poop), but he was really whining--on the verge of crying--and holding his crotch. I thought he was probably just uncomfortable from the wet/poopy diaper, although it's never affected him like that before. So anyway, I changed him and noticed that he had a red area on his bum (close to his anus), which he's had before--I just put Penaten on it, and it clears right up. So I thought that it was probably a combinaton of the wet diaper and the redness that was making him uncomfortable. He continued to whine, and squat for a a few minutes after his diaper change, but it eventually stopped.

Now this morning, almost immediately (he of course had a very wet diaper) after he got up, he was doing the same thing!! No red bum, but he was squatting and crying like he's in extreme discomfort. After I changed his diaper, he stopped.

Has anybody had a little one suddenly HATE to be in a wet diaper, and do something similar? I'm wondering if that's the case, or if he might have some sort of infection (penile, possibly)?? I really hope that's not the case, and of course I can't get him to the doctor today because dh is gone with the car to work, and since it's saturday, our doctor is closed before he gets home. They're also closed tomorrow, although if he's still doing it I suppose I could just take him to a walk-in place... He seems just fine otherwise--and he is peeing lots, and didn't seem to be in any discomfort during the night. What do you guys think? Do you think he's suddenly realized he doesn't like to be in a wet diaper, or could there be something wrong?

Could he be constipated?

Hey whiskers-

I wonder, since he is only doing it when he is wet and not when he is dry, if it is just him telling you that he wants a change. That is suppose to happen eventually, and can be a sign that they may be ready to begin potty training. Constipation would be my next guess.

Sorry I am not much help.

Thanks for the replies ladies!

Yeah, I actually thought at first that he might be constipated, but he has had several normal poops (soft ones), so I'm thinking now that it's just the wet diaper issue. It's funny how it just came on like that though--literally, one day, he HATED to be in a wet diaper! He couldn't of cared less a week ago.

We're actually going to bring the potty out tonight, we've been talking about it for a couple days now. Of course, I don't expect him to use it properly, but maybe he'll start to get the idea... I can hope, can't I??!! :jester::D

Glad he's not constipated. I didn't have any time to write more when I replied but I also wanted to tell you my daughter hated to be in a wet diaper. I can't remember if it suddenly came on but I figured it out at 20 months. I told her if she she didn't like the diaper she can go in the potty. So she did! It was so simple, and she didn't even have any accidents. She does have some sensitivity issues so I think that's why she hated the diaper. To this day she hates to wear underwear and is very picky about the clothes she wears.
