It is difficult to delicately describe the symptoms experienced with sensations in the stomach. The term I've learned to live by is "explosions".
I've found that it has nothing to do with my diet. If I eat something disagreeable, I may have no symptoms. If I eat something light and smooth, I might have Explosion City. I can't leave the house until I "explode" because of the extreme discomfort.
To be more specific with your question, again, its hard to describe, but for me, it literally feels like my stomach is eating itself from the inside out. It feels like my stomach wall lining is evaporating and disintegrating due to the acid.
When I was a college student I would always have at least two rolls of Tums/Rolaids on hand, but I found neither to be helpful. I wish I had some sort of positive treatment I could pass along to you, but irritable bowel syndrome is one that has always escaped me, and one I have never mastered.
Best wishes for that tummy of yours, and I wish I could shoo away that darned costo of yours! IBS + costo = no fun. Take it easy and be good to yourself.

You mentioned IBS in your title. IBS for me was diarrhea all the time, with discomfort in my lower abdomen, especially the left side. My stomach would sometimes be very acidy, but no spasms. Are you experiencing mostly pain in your stomach rather than pain in your bowels?

Hi,
I started eliminating foods a couple of years ago and since I limit wheat and sugars and eat oatmeal (the kind that you cook on the stove) every other day I don't get IBS anymore. Yeast can build up in your bowels also, not just the who-ha. I didn't know about that either until I read about it looking for foods to try eliminating. It makes sense though. Once in a while I crave pizza and I eat to my heart's content because whether it's 1 piece or 4 it's going to give me IBS. When I do get it I get bubbles trapped on the left by my ribcage.
When I took that horrid guifenesin stuff for about 2 or 3 years I went through IBS heck. I couldn't travel, or order anything good to eat out anywhere because I'd have to go sometimes a few minutes after eating it.
Look into the rare side effects with any medications you are taking. I have a lot of trouble with medicines, a rather unpleasant thing from my mom's side of the family.
Hope you start feeling better.

I'll add a quick note since you mention experiencing symptoms in the chest area and suspect they may be digestive system related.
I never knew what "gastroesophageal reflux disease" (GERD) was until the other day. I've experienced symptoms from it for more than 3 years now, but I have never had it diagnosed, and doctors are nowhere near figuring it out. It was only through online support that I got to the bottom of it.
I'm not sure if that may be the cause of what you are experiencing, but I would give it a look. In short, for me, it causes a lot of the "twisting/pulling/sharp" sensations that you explain. You said it was difficult for yourself to explain, and I too find it very difficult to explain. As a matter of fact, over 3 years I was never able to come close to explaining it until yesterday, and I'm still not completely understanding of it yet. Here's hoping this helps in some way!
One quick additional note is that GERD and costo can sometimes correlate or mimic one another, so sometimes its hard to tell which symptom you're actually experiencing at times. All my best goes to you.

Hi,
I've had IBS way before I had Fibro, I guess it's been almost 20 years. I call my bowel attacks "episodes". They come out of the blue. Some days I'm fine, some days I'm in the bathroom all day.
The feeling would be lots of bloating, gassy in my stomach and very crampy in my lower gut right before the "main event" if you know what I mean. If I know a meal is coming up, I better have a restroom near me or at least know where the closest one is within a mile or so. I can eat bad foods (fatty or whatever) and be fine. Then I can eat a salad or some other healthy, light meal and totally be miserable. There's no ryme or reason to it. My gut just does whatever it wants.
If your actual stomach (up closer to your ribs) is giving you trouble, you might have an ulcer, GERD or food allergy or something else. I also have reflux and I produce alot of acid so I take Prilosec OTC every day and if I have an episode, I take a few swigs of Pepto. Those are the only things that help for me.
Don't let it go on too long before seeing a gastroenterologist.
Good luck!

Hi. For me it's intense cramps/spasms in my tummy. This is bend over, hard to breath, pray to make it stop pain! My IBS is C & D. But I lean towards C most of the time. Then for no reason at all, I'll have a day of D. I take meds for IBS, but for the life of me, I don't remember what it's called and I'm at work so I can't check. I also get the pain in the sternum area and it takes my breath away. It literally feels like twisting, squeezing, rip out of my sternum pain. I've had an ulcer and GERD for many years and this sternum pain has never been a part of that. This pain is new to me and I've been assuming it's Costo or just part of Fibro. Do you also have the stabbed by swords through the ribs pain? I get that along with the sternum pain.

I get the same intense pain that 1st blush does. To the point of throwing up. The dr put me on levbid or something like that. All I can do is hold my breath. It hurts right at the top of my stomach where your ribs seperate. I have had the scope, and don't have an ulcer, gerd or anything other than the ibs causing it (or the fibro who knows)
btw c means constipation and d means diarhhea (spelling)

Like today I felt fine and sitting and having a creme brulee latte with friends and heading home I started getting the cramps, the sweating, panic sets in that I'll be lucky to make it home on time. (I did)!
It hits out of the blue for me. Usually symptoms hit a week or two before my period will start. I swear there's only one week out of every month I feel half way decent.
The ibs started at a young age for me. I'd always be miserable on car rides.
I have a big family history of it going all the way back to the civil war even.
Kind of interesting but yep they had it back then.
Other days I can drink coffee all day and be just fine. Go figure.
I told a doctor once I wished I had migraines instead of ibs...my thinking is that it would be less embarresing. He said No you wouldn't. I have a friend now who has migraines and she's puking all the time when she's having an episode.
Yeah, I think I'd take the puking over the uncontrollable diarreah!
Now life dishes us fibro too!!! How cruel can it get!?

Hi I'm new, so not used to how this board works yet, so hope I am replying to the original message:confused:, & not repeating anything already said:confused:
I was diagnosed with FM about 5 year ago, ME, 3 years ago, but had IBS much longer, & thankfully now manage to keep it pretty much under control with diet,
the thing that jumped out at from your original post...I hope, its the original pst..lol:confused:, is that the problem kicked in after a Latte??, ....that suggests to me, that you are dairy intolerant, have you tried a food elimination diet, & food diary, <removed>
I find I'm sensitive to a lot of stuff, but find I can get away with most stuff in moderation, but only after I cleaned my system out with a totally clean holistic diet for 2 weeks, & now live by the 95% rule, 95% of what I eat, is Wheat, Meat, Dairy, Salt, Sugar, alchohol & Chemical free,
I never eat meat, as thats a big trigger for me, & can't drink milk, or have it in Latte, or shakes etc, but can drink, soy, rice, almond, or goats milk in these instead, without any problems, & I can eat moderate amounts of diary cheese & butter etc, Goats, or Sheeps cheeses been fine, I also find too much wheat, causes a lot of problems, both with IBS, & FM, & I can't tolerate food additives, but that affects the FM/ME more, fish, & sometimes Chicken/poultry can be fine too............its also worth looking at the nightshade food family, potatoes, peppers etc, & also the mushroom/fungus/fermented foods family, as I know a lot of people can have problems with those too.
I know it sounds hard to cut this lot out, but you'll find you have your own triggers, & it might not be as bad as all this lot, & even if it is, if your not eating these things often, you'll find you don't react so badly, & it does become pretty easy to avoid the bad stuff, you do get used to it :)
The only real problems I tend to have with IBS now, are after antibiotics, & I have found a herb, Cats Claw to be a big help in nipping that quickly in the bud, so I can recomend trying that too;)

hey sammye, goodmama here. i agree with you that it's difficult to deal with the fibro. i was diagnosed with it 22 years ago. i'm in my 50's now. i have had more problems with it recently because of hormonal imbalance (perimenopause) so i think that's another trigger that can exacerbate symptoms in some people. i've been having episodes of ibs more often although i have never been officially diagnosed with ibs. making changes in my diet definitely helps to alleviate digestive problems. i'm new to this board, so hope i'm doing things right here. take care all of you out there with fibro. i know it's no fun sometimes.

Yeah,I wonder what the menopause will do! More unbearable pain and discomfort?! Bring it on! Something to look forward to! Sometimes it feels like I have all ready begun that and I'm only 38. I think it's the fm symptoms though.
Yep, it was definately the creme brulee latte...I tried another one! BUT it's so good. I wonder about the dairy too. I know my body doesn't like starches at all like potatoes and corn. I'm too rebellious to not eat what I want. I should know better by now!!!

Hi Niecy,
I was diagnosed with 'probable' IBS. My low stomach hurts so bad that I almost pass out in the bathroom all kinds of pain and nothing is happening! then I'm either constipated for weeks or I have to run to the bathroom and yes accidents have happened. I always keep clean underwear because I don't know what when how or why IBS will attack me.
Have you had your Gall Bladder checked? I had to have mine removed..I also had H-Pylori and I have GERD plus osteoarthritis so its hard to stay up to speed because my hands hurt so bad.
Good Luck to you and be sure to talk to your Doctor about Gall Bladder symptoms.

I have just joined this board so not sure how it all works, but i do have fibro and ibs, plus costo.
i have found over time that my stomach often is bad depending on the amount of a particular food. for instance if i have a cup of instant coffee i am ok, if i have 2 cups my ibs is off and running. if i have percolater coffee or espresso coffee i am also in a bad situation.
Bread, well all gluten foods upset me, I think it is about the wheat fermenting in my gut.
so i am now gluten free and that is a plus.
the best thing to stop the cramping i have found is Chamomile tea, and also my daughter is a Naturopath and she does give me a herbal tincture of chamomile simple htat is good. it makes you relax the cramping muscles.
The biggest hurdle i have is the panic that i feel when i am not at home in regard to the thought of having to find a toilet in double fast time. so i do try to talk my self into the feeling that all is ok.

Like 1stblush I too cycle both C and D. I have C for a few days and then I suddenly have D for a day or two. I too have to take meds for IBS from the gastro. I take a generic of levbid called symax. I took the other generic brand called hyoscyamine but if I had to take it too long it gave me the blurry vision side effect. I have had IBS for so long, suffered all the horrible noises and the not knowing whether to go someplace or not. Actually C was so much worse for me, that trying to alter my diet was not a chore for me if it gave me relief. My gastro says IBS is brought on by stress more than anything else and of course my life is entirely stress free....NOT....just read my I'm back thread to find out what happens on a regular basis in my life. So stress is my middle name, and I have learned to use the meds wisely to keep the pain and IBS problems to a minimum.

IBS was part of the package in my early years of fibro. I'd say between ages of 28 and 40. I am convinced now though, at 55, that a carefully controlled diet and daily fiber supplementation are the best for me.
I think it's really important to look at IBS as a symptom of something, versus IBS being part of Fibro. That way, you will make sure that medical tests clear you of any specific diseases of the gut, like Crohn's, GERD, gall bladder problems and hernias. And one other thing I know brings on IBS for me is panic. Anything that causes your system to "rev up", whether for positive (happy) reasons or negative ones (fear) makes your body dump large amounts of adrenaline into your system, which makes the body want to "purge" itself. Even causing your metabolism to "rev up" by eating unusually rich foods will make your body "excited".
So for me, I think simply doing whatever I know works to keep me calm is best. And sometimes, as others have mentioned, that will be making sure I know where the closest bathroom is at all times......;)
Peace and Comfort,
Paddy
