Hi,
I experience spasms and cramping up inside my guts... i guess large and/or small intestine, very bad and it causes trouble breathing also. But, no actual pain and I dont get diarrhea with it at all. If anything I am always constipated. But I can feel the guts like cramping and spasming and its very, very uncomfortable. More than 1 person has told me this sounds like IBS but is it truly? ? I take an anti-anxiety med (like Xanax) and it does loosen up the spasms. But while it is happening, the distress can be very great and the trouble breathing is upsetting.
Does this happen to anyone else here and if so, how was it diagnosed? I mean were u surely given the IBS diagnosis and what do u do to treat/prevent this?
I also have a symptom where i can drink a glass of water and almost as soon as I do, feels like my stomach "drops" or something, and I feel great pressure inside, like something pushing on my organs and I again have trouble breathing. BUt this experience does not feel like the spasming that I described up above. i am tired of this hell and not getting any real clear answers. Have had an endoscopy and just had mild gastritis and told I had spasms in my esophagus. I have Gastroparesis but find it difficult to believe that is behind any of this. I was in so much discomfort earlier from trouble breathing and the pressure inside that i was in tears and almost went to the hospital. Taking an anti-anxiety med relaxed my insides and ME to a degree, so that i felt al ittle better and able to somehow bear it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! Oh and I am female, 35, not overweight at all.
FG

Farm girl,
I have similar symptoms. Once in a while I will have diarrhea, but never constipation. Most of my problems are stomach pain, pressure, the feeling that my stomach is pushing into my lungs and it's hard to breathe. I also can feel my stomach/intestines having spasms, they're not painful, just annoying. I have had upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, Hida scan, gastric emptying and two abdominal ultrasounds, all normal. My GI is going to order a CT scan before he confirms it is IBS, but everything is pointing to it. I had the colonoscopy today, so I have been without solid food the past two days and actually had no pain during this time. Like you, I am in my 30's and thin also. Hope this helps.

MAvs,
Thank u for replying! It feels good to know Im not the only one. It seems noone ive talked to has experienced these sorts of symptoms... maybe 1 or 2 but not all in combination. I get pretty nervous when the spasms are severe, like i wont be able to breathe at all and will suffocate. Does that ever happen to u, u kind of panic a little? What do u take, if anything, to help alleviate these terrible symptoms?

My doctor gave me Bentyl for the spasms, but I try not to take it too often, but it does help when I do. I used to take effexor xr for the panic attacks that I would get, but I weaned myself off of that last year. However, since then, my anxiety has gotten worse, so I probably should start again. Do you currently take anything for your spasms?

FG,
The best thing I have ever used for cramping as well as spasms is a homeopathic remedy --- Magnesia Phos. 6X -- works well.
Your symptoms do not sound like IBS.

Harry,
In your opinion, what do my symptoms sound like?
I have been taking a Magesium product that helps, but not enough I fear. It's a good product though, Mg citrate in a powder form that u mix with hot water and drink like a tea.
Adding to this or maybe complicating, i also have Gastroparesis, a stomach condition (damaged vagus nerve due to Lyme disease for many years).
I didnt think my symptoms were truly IBS and felt the one digestive doctor just slapped that tag on me becasue she didnt know what else it could be. I am taking an anti-anxiety/benzo medication called Klonopin for this but i was already on it/taking it, since 2005. I was desiring actually to wean off it and was trying to but then all this stuff started and I had to quit the taper. I do not like taking this kind of med for a spasm/whatever all it is problem and benzos are not good medications to be on anyway, but I honestly do not know what else to do and I have to be able to work and go to school.
Any more input or advice would be welcomed!
Oh, I have an anti-spasmodic medication called Hyosycamine SL (generic for Levsin I believe) but it really is hit or miss. One day I took and had really bad spasms and then some days I dont take (it is PRN) it and Im totally fine. All of this has been very frustrating and ive lost a lot of weight because i cant ingest things when my abdomen is so distended and there is so much pressure in there... i can barely get down a glass of water when it's really bad.
Thanks for listening,
FarmGirl

FG,
Magnesia Phos can be bought at most health food stores -- it isa very common homeopathic remedy.
There is much information available online and the symptoms of IBS--- and they can be quite confusing. The criteria that I like best was developed in Rome in the early ninties to try to standarize the criteria on a world wide basis by Gastro experts from around the world. I think the last meeting was held in May, 2006 in LA, CA.
It is still chaired by Dr Drossman, MD and the group of world wide experts has changed some of the criteria for the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders --(FGID) (28 adult and 16 children) including IBS-- It is now know as the Rome III (3) Criteria.
Very Breifly IBS is 3 months of 2 of the following 3 symptoms--
1. Improvement with BM.
2.Onset is assosiated with freqency of BMs.
3. Change in apperance (form) of stool.
This is a very-- very short summary of the Rome III Criteria for IBS. It is not up to date but post #12 page 3 on the sticky thread "Worth Reading IBS'ers" at the top of this page.
Your symptoms fit more gastroparesis with diabetes.
I think the best magnesium supplement on the market is the chelated type that is bonded to a protein amino acid. It is Internationally Patented by Albion Labs and sold to manufacturers for sale and distribution. I like and use Carlson and Solgar chelated minerals and I buy them online. Magnesium citrate is an acid forming supplement.
Levsin is used to relax longer muscles like the type that is in the transverse colon & intestines-- never had success with the stomach muscle and empting.

Hi Rainbow!
Didnt see responses til today. No, I supposedly dont have Celiac. I've had 3 Endoscopies, the most recent being this past July, and each doctor said I showed no sign of Celiac. *shrug* Im aware of it, what it is, and am very glad I dont have it!
Today the spasms started up so severely that i had some serious difficulty breathing again. My whole abdominal cavity protrudes and I can feel the pressure on my insides, I guess lungs and whatever else. Feel like im never going to get any relief from this problem other than to take doses of a mild tranquilizer which i HATE doing. I ought not have to take a tranq to get relief from a functional bowel problem, but anti-spasmodics dont seem to work for me at all. I changed my diet and have lost 75 pounds now, from this time last year (! That is a lot of weight, people!). I work out several times a week on a treadmill (has an incline plus arms for more of a workout). I do many push-ups a day and can feel my body has grown stronger.
But still the hellish-ness with cramped/twisted -up guts. It doesnt even hurt when it happens, its more a sensation.... like i can sense the guts twisting and contracting like really hard... but i dont really feel actual pain. Im taking a fibe drink that usually helps me to have a BM (but not always). At wit's end. Im afraid to go anywhere because i never know when an "attack" will hit, not unlike living in fear of a panic attack. I have trouble talking and breathing when the attacks hit and have to breathe from my neck and chest muscles. Can anyone else relate to this?? I feel like im the only one or something......... anyone?
Harry, I didnt acquire the remedy u mentioned but maybe I will. I took some of my Magnesium drink earlier but it didnt seem to help much today. And I have the Mg from Albion labs... I take enough Mg daily I believe in addition to liquid vitamins for months now, great loads of probiotics, a greens drink with all kinds of stuff in it and digestive enzymes. Its like, what else can I possibly do??? And, i found out yesterday I am losing my medical insurance effective the end of this month. Im asking and have been asking God to please heal me completely.
Thanks for listening,

Oh, i forgot to mention or clarify that I do have Gastroparesis, have known that since 2003 or so. So i have that, plus whatever this thing is/IBS?? and also a hiatal hernia plus diverticulosis. I'm 35 and this seems like a lot for this age (plus i had these things minus the IBS mess in my late 20s too). I had severe GERD but that has come under control nicely with the utilization of, of all things, Melatonin! Took it for about 2-3 weeks and noticed the GERD was almost totally gone. So thats one mess out of the picture but the combo of all the rest may be what causes my symptoms to feel so very severe when they do occur. I have to fight to breathe, im wayyy distended, can hardly get breathe it feels like, great discomfort.
The only main test i didnt have was a Colonscopy and i just learned I am losing my medical insurance come the end of this month so i guess i'll never get one.
Thanks for listening.
