My Dr. has taken me from 40mg 2 times a day for 2 weeks to 20mg 2 times a day now going on 2 weeks. I want off totally. I have only taken them for maybe a month now. Have I taken it long enough for Dr. to even consisder to ween me off it? Dr. says I'll go thru withdrawals and wind up in ER! Is that true after just a month of taken it? Pain is not that bad, now, that I can tell.

Hi,

You will need to ween off the drug. It only takes 7-10 days for your body to become dependant on a narcotic. Don't take a dose and wait for an hour or two...you will find your body will quickly remind you to take you medication.

Good Luck,

Marsha

Once again, it depends on the person, some people become dependent quickly, some don't. I was on Fentanyl patches for 8 months and weaned off them over a period of only 3 weeks and had no w/d symptoms at all...and everyone said you ha to do it over months. I've been on narcotics/opiods for 10 years and can switch from one to another and not have any w/d symptoms. So it really just depends on the person and their body chemistry.

There's no reason why he couldn't tritrate you down to 10 mg's a week for a couple of weeks and then 5 mg's for a couple of weeks, then let you get off. He can't make you stay on the med, if you don't want to take it.
