Can anyone please tell me if you have to pay taxes on SSDI back pay and the monthly payments you receive?

It just depends on the amount you receive and whether you're married or not. When you receive your 1099 from SS there will be a form that comes with it. It will show you how to calculate to see if you will have to pay any taxes on your SSDI. Also if your backpay is for past yrs there is forms to calculate wheter you owe taxes from back yrs. Then you can also chose just to calculate taxes on the whole lump sum instead of figuring up the back yrs. I hope this helps you understand about SSDI and if you will have to pay taxes on it or not.

rayefaye, thanks for the reply. SS is paying me backpay from May of 2006 to oct. of 2008. Also I got married in oct. 2008. Can you provide any further info on how this will affect my tax? Thanks, Davidewideglide

I assume you will be filing a joint return since you were married in 2008. There will an allowance of a certain amount for people filing a joint return in which you will combine your income. If you file married filing seperately the rate is not as high as filing jointly. As far as the yrs of 2006 and 2007, you would be filing as a single person would.
