Hi I am new to this board and need some assurance from other moms.

My baby girl was born on the 4th November and up until the weekend she was very good. She now starts crying at 1am and does not stop till about 5am. She has cramps and is very uncomfortable. We has an appointment at the peadeatrition today and he says she has colic. My Dh helps with the feeds as she is a bottle baby till 12am and then I take over so I at least do get some sleep during the night. I would like to know how do other moms in the same situation cope?

I feel your pain...my dd is 8 months old now and the most happiest baby ever, but she was colic starting at about 3 weeks till 9 weeks. i was lucky where she would cry during the day and not nap...so at least me and my husband were able to sleep at night and this was all new to be b/c my oldest daughter (now 6) was perfect from day 1. Have you tried any gas relief drops or grip water for the crampy / gas. That would help my dd a little. She also had acid reflux so the ped. put her on med. for a month. Hang in there...it does get soooo much better. I didn't believe it. She seriously woke up one day and a new baby was there.

Please check to see if your baby has reflux. Mine does and we blamed it all on colic until it didn't go away in time. Then, we finally took her to a GI doctor who confirmed that she had reflux and we put her on medicine. By this point, she had developed a severe food/bottle aversion and I had to feed her asleep for many many months. We are still working on the food aversion. We tell each other now that we will be able to recognize the signs if our next baby has reflux and we will put the baby on medicine right away.

Have you considered changing her formula? My daughter became extremely aggitated when she was 2 1/2 weeks old. She would just cry and cry at night and make lots of grunting noises. I switched her from a milk based formula to a soy and she was like a different child. We did it very gradually so as not to disrupt her system all at once.
I would try a formula change. It at least couldn't hurt. It can take about 4-5 days to see an improvement as well. Also, like the previous poster said, baby gripe water is wonderful! It really helped my daughter with gas. We also bicycled her legs to help her during the formula change.
My heart goes out to you! I know it's tough.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advise.
Dina the pead checked everything yesterday and 'ruled' out reflux but if it continues I will definatley have it checked out.

Lauralu I spoke to the pead about changing formulas and he told me he did not think it was necessary. He did prescribe some medication for her but she spits it out as soon as we give it to her. As for changing the formula I am now so scared b/c of the melamine found in the formula here. Luckily the brand I use S26 is not affected or so they say, I am not keen to change.

Carlton your post gives me hope, I hope that my baby also just wakes up one day a new child. I just wish her colic episode would be during the day and not at night as the sleep deprevation it really getting to me. I suppose I just need to get used to it.

Thanks again to all of you it is nice to know I am not alone and have ladies to turn to.

My DD had colic for the first three months and it was definitely a difficult time. Luckily, she slept well at night, but she cried pretty much all day and refused to nap. After trying everything, I asked the Dr for a prescription for gas (that a friend recommended) and it worked like a charm for her. The colic went away practically right away and we have never looked back. Hang in there!!

Amy, Keira and I are doing alright she sleeps but wakes up after a hour with cramps and then I battle to put her down again. Last night DH did all the feeds and left me to sleep as I was totally exhausted. I felt like a new person this morning until she started crying non stop again.

We have had a rough few days she cried for 3 hours non stop yesterday and there was nothing I could do for her. We gave her her medication and it seemed to be a bit better. I have also changed her formula to a hypo allergenic one and it seems to be better.

I have made an appointment with a chiropracter for our baby girl as I have heard they can sometimes cure colic. Has anyone had any experience with this type of treatment? Our appointment in tomorrow afternoon and I really hope that it works.

You know what also helped my daughter was to be swadled real tight. She hated it at about 5 weeks, but a friend of mine suggested it and it seemed to work. It seemed to calm her down where she was able to put herself back to sleep. We did that until about nine weeks...good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. She is now 5 weeks old and I do try swaddle her but she hates her hands covered. Late at night I try and swaddle her when it is cooler and then she does not seem to mind. It is summer here now and about 25 degrees celsius in the evening.

Charlene sorry about the sleepless nights...my baby wakes up only once and that makes me so exaustead during the day.
I can not wait for his cord to fall because usually I give my babies long baths at night and that make them sleep through the night....plus try before going to sleep to keep Keira awake for long time that will help her to sleep longer hours.
for the bath it will help her also with her colics when you keep putting warm water on her tummy.....good luck !!!

I am sorry that you are having a rough time with colic...it s just a phase that babies go through...and once it s over,......the teething starts.
Just keep in mind that you are doing all you can .....and that you are being an excellent mother.....at times i used to feel that i am doing something wrong when DS used to cry with pain.

Sousou thanks for the bathing tip. DH does bath time so I will tell him to make it longer. he does however throw warm water on her tummy and she seems to like it. We also try and keep her awake longer before bathtime. Sometimes she has one of her colic episodes in the afternoon from about 2pm onwards. I wish Keira only woke up once... more like 4-5 times a night.

Amy I know there is nothing I can do for her pain but it breaks my heart and i feel like a bad mother at times (even though it is not my fault), it sends me off in to a crying spell and that does not hep matters at all. I just wish I could take all her pain away:(.

I took her to the Chiroprater yesterday and he did a massage and a re-alligment of her spine, if she shows no improvement by Sunday I will take her again on Monday. The Chiro seems confident that he can help 'cure' her colic. I really do hope so.

Charlene, I'm so sorry you're battling w/ colic w/ your little girl. It breaks my heart too when Little Curren cries & I don't know what to do for him. I can only imagine having an inconsolable baby. Just remember it won't last forever & it will definitely get better...hopefully sooner rather than later.

Holly thanks for stopping by and thinking of me, it is heartbreaking when she cries and I cannnot comfort her.
Keira is doing better and not screaming as much She had a really good night last night and only woke up once at after 12am and that was as 5am. I had 4 1/2 hours of uninterupted sleep which was fantastic. I am going to take her to the chiro tomorrow for another treatment adn hopefully it will "cure" her of her colic.

Hi Char.

My little girl used to scream every night from 5pm to 9pm. Nothing really helped her. She didn't have reflux, we changed her formula, even gave her gas drops. I would take her outside for a change of scenery in the 90 degree heat and would be sweating like mad but sometimes it would keep her quiet for a few minutes. this lasted for about the first 4 months of her life. all i could do was wait it out. there were nights where I just wanted to cry because she was up all night crying. Hang in there. It will get better. :)

CBB thanks for stopping by. I sometimes sit and cry with Keira b/c I am so heart broken b/c I cannot help my baby. I know that when I get upset it rubs off on her but I just cannot help it. Luckily my sister is coming tomorrow from South Africa for 10 days and she wll be a great help, having had 2 boys not so long ago who both had colic.

I took her to the chiro today for another session so I hope it is going to help. She is being difficult right now but DH is luckily with her......I need a break.

The only thing we can do is wait it out:(:(

Ok so my DD will be 7 weeks on Tuesday and she seems to be going through phases.........she has had two good nights and then one very bad one, is this normal?

Holly luckily DH is now on leave so I get to have a bit of a break. He now knows what I go through everyday with Keira, not that she is difficult everyday.
