My husband filed for disability in August of this year. He has ADHD and is Bipolar. In June of 2006 he was fired because he had a manic episode and verbally attacked several co-workers. He had quit several jobs over the course of 5 years prior to this because of his inability to cope with his mood swings. After being fired he sought treatment with a pysch doc. He was put on 5 different medications and goes to therapy monthly. In August of this year he attempted to try working again. The same problems arose and within 3 weeks he was fired for the same reasons.
I know that both ADHD and Bipolar are qualifying illnesses for disability. I was just wondering the approval rate for those who have filed for a mental disability. Where you denied first, how many appeals etc.
Also, when we filed the original claim we stated that he last worked full time in June 2006. We did state that he earned money in August of 2008 on the application. If he is approved does anyone know if they will consider him disabled from June 2006 or do you think they will start from August 2008 since he held a job for 3 weeks?
Thanks for any input.

I applied in 2006, had a hearing and was denied, waiting on appeal.
I tried to work too, 3 diferent times. Last time was for 5 months till my body couldn't handle the pain, I worked part-time. The Judge at my hearing called it a failed-work attempt and it didn't go against me, he also stated my onset was from the date of my original application 2006.
So I'm thinking your husband tried to work and due to his illness, he couldn't.
Good luck on your case.

I was born with mental illness yet I was denied back in 2000 because the judge said I was just lazy but I had worked for many years off and on and did volunteer work. He was mean and denied me. Then my lawyer didn't appeal. I filed again when my physical ailments got really bad and got my disabilty from them. Some say you can get it from mental and some from physical but I tried when I was 46 and now I am 55 and crippled so I got it.
I wish you luck.
