Hi All,

I'm in Physical Therapy for my neck and shoulders but my Doctor told me if PT doesn't work then it's off to a Pain Specialist for me:(.

I have been to Pain Specialists on and off for years and the thing I don't like is the Weight Gain from the shots.

We're told to lose weight or keep our weight down but how can we do that when we are given shots that cause us to gain weight! Go figure on that one.

I wonder how many ladies (and gents too) have quit Pain Specialists due to weight gain? I'll go but I won't be happy about it because the arthritis in my knees won't be able to take the extra weight I know I'll be gaining. It is a lose lose situation all the way around:(

Anyway that is my whining for the day.

Have a nice quiet evening all.

Belle~

hi belle,
since starting with a pain specialist i have gained 5 pounds. i have had 3 procedures in the past 2 months. the steroids call to food and i give it water. starve you little brat!! giggle. it is a hard balance. for now tho i am going to continue. i think determination plays in here for me. i am determined to protect my body from the fallout of my therapy choices.
p.t. is still my favorite choice. giggle. soon it will be next year and i can go again, yipeeee!!!!
in the end girlfriend it is an individual choice only you can make.
peace,

I've never done pain specialist, thanks for clueing me in. I struggle so much with weight gain I will certainly remember your words of warning. Of course I would probably be the opposite and I would miss my chance at that gorgeous hour glass figure....shake it off glojer no time for dreaming.....lol!

I've been going to the same pain specialist for 17 years. I've not gained weight because of shots or anything else he has done.

The only time I've gained weight is from starting an anti-depressant or maybe having the dose raised. It levels out for me after a while.

The lyrica, cymbalta nightmare was a huge weight gainer. When I stopped taking them my weight went back down again.

Right now I've gained 50 pounds since May because there's something wrong in my knee and have had a bad time walking and also having procedures done in my back has helped because it effected my walking too. All the weight came from not being able to exercise. The back's better and next week I'll get called with a date to have knee surgery. After that it's back to walking, etc. again.

All the best to you.

(((HUGS ALL))). DaBeachSiren, how do you do it? With your knee and back problems...Its on my left side that my hand/wrist kills me, my low back, my knee and my ankle they're all so painful AND NOW the Doctor says I'll be needing a Cane for long time and I asked him how can I use a cane when I can't put any pressure on my hand?

I shake my head and limp on.

(I have to remember the water instead of food :) )

Be Well All.

hi belle....i have over the yrs. taken steroid injections and pills. they both bother my stomach and i do get that hungry feeling also. what i do is eat when this happens, but go for low calorie snacks....yogurt, granola bars, etc. my problem with keeping my weight under control is definitely lack of excercise....i am a diabetic also..so i really need to be careful. right now i am 5 lbs over my ideal weight...but with holidays etc. i don't think i'll be losing it!!
take care.....bevann

Talking seriously about weight gain, I gain weight in stress situations. I have put on about 4lbs this past week or so with the stress of things. I take steroids everyday (prednisone) and that has helped me to lose weight, but I lose it ever so slowly and of course gain it back when life turns upside down. I am sure with stress I increase my food intake without realizing it at first, then of course when I flare it is all over with. The lack of exercise during these times doesn't help either.

Belle... I also I have continuous problems on the Left side wayyyy more than my right. I am in PT. and I also use a cane to walk with (just not at home where I can use furniture, walls, etc) Just today my husband and I went out, and he was SO confused that if my Left leg hurt, why was I using my right side for the cane... My PT (He's just awesome) anyways, he has me using my cane that way, since my left arm just can't do it...
I step Left Leg & Right Cane forward together at the same time, Then Right Leg in between them... Left Leg/Right Cane, Right Leg between...
Now If I do use the cane on my Left side, I'm hobbling almost as badly as without a cane... Now on my Right side, sure I'm a little slow... but I almost have a normal gait :)
Anyways I hope that helps you... :) It sure made it possible for me to do a heck of a lot more than I could before :)
Oh Yeah... and don't forget to ask your doctor about handicap parking permits!! I might be 30, but I finally am accepting things as the way they are. And I tell you what, it's a big difference when you get to park so close, especially this time of year when the stores are SO busy... I'm not half as tired by the time I get in the door of the store as I use to be :)

And about the weight gain... I do not see a pain specialist, yet, it has been talked about... But I use the PT, Rheumatologist, & Neurologist as my DR.s... But, Taking the Lyrica & then the Amitriptyline both had me gain weight. I've gone from 138 to 150 to 173 in the past 8 weeks, I hope it ends soon, All my doctors are expecting it to cap off and then start to drop again... I hope!

Good Luck :)~S.

Hi Belle,

I keep moving and stretch. Other than 2 daughters and a husband that isn't very helpful I have no choice but to do it. My family is in the mid-west. I have days that I have to lie in bed, I get flares like everyone else does.

My pain specialist is wonderful. I get ablations done, that sort of thing. I also have a good mix of medicines that do the best for me. I have a pretty high pain threshold and just do what I've got to do.

Maybe you should seek the help of a pain specialist after you rule out ortho problems like carpal tunnel, entrapped nerves, etc.. I don't know what I'd do without my doc..

Hugs to all of you out there.
