When you are high up there and you feel like you can't control yourself, what do you fo to help control? Like what coping strategies do any of you use? Or is it something you need to take or what.

When I'm extremely manic, I do any one of the following:

* Take long walks
* Listen to soft, relaxing music (such as smooth jazz or classical)
* Cook a nice meal for myself
* Run on my treadmill
* Read a good book
* Watch a TV documentary to help get my mind off of my emotional state
* Talk to a good friend on the phone
* Take a 15 minute nap
* Have a phone session with my tdoc
* Surf the Internet
* Take a walk in nature and/or along the beach
* If my mania is severe, I contact my pdoc and tdoc and admit myself IP

Those are really good ideas- Dreams in Neon.
Something else I have started doing is writting. That way I can keep notes and refer back to things that didn't or do work. I even keep track of foods and meds in my little journal. For some reason writting helps me feel that someone is listening.

Yes, of course. I knew there was one I forgot -- and that was it. Writing in a journal is an excellent way to help calm yourself down and get your mind off of your mania.

When you're manic how is your concentration, decision-making? Are you irritable and/or agitated when you're manic? Do you stay up all night or stay up very late? Do you have a flood of thoughts for a long period of time?

Rob,

When I'm manic, I have a great deal of difficulty with concentration and decision making. This is due to mania, racing thoughts, rapid cycling, delusions, auditory hallucinations, anxiety and paranoia. (I have all of these symptoms when I'm manic.)

My manic episodes usually start off with extreme happiness followed by high energy/restlessness, then depression and finally irritability and agitation.

I don't eat or sleep when I'm manic and rapid cycle. I don't feel like I need to sleep, so I don't and can stay up for as long as a week or more. I don't even feel tired. Instead, I feel completely rested as if I have awoken from a deep, sound sleep.

My racing thoughts go 100 mph, so they stick around for only a minute, if that. Sometimes the thoughts come at me so quickly that I end up getting a headache from them.

How about you? What is your mania like?

Unfortionately i've just lost my best friend because of this stupid disorder. She thinks i'm too needy and that i just overdramatize everything. Its as if she think that i can turn this thing on and off whenever i want!!! I can't understand how she think i'm supposed to do anything rational while in this mood! I mean she tried talking to me during an episode, and i told her that i just needs to calm down and go for a walk and then i'd talk with her when i was level headed. But then i get back and she glares at me and ignores me. i'm like SERIOUSLY?! :mad: How do i explain to her that what i have is a real problem and that she has to just be a better friend? or is she even worth it.

It's impossible for those around us, esp. close to us, to understand what our reality is.
I have lost relationships, too: people have said 'I just can't deal with your condition."
They judge us by their own neuro-typical, "civilian" standards of behaviour. Because they can't do anything else, they don't know anything else, just as we don't know anything except our realities.

Try explaining your condition to her, give her some stuff to read, and if she can't give you the space you need, maybe a casual relationship would be better here.

BTW, you did exactly the right thing by saying you needed to take a time-out.

Something that helps me is to forgive the person for hurting me. It's not really their fault.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's so very hurtful.

Thankyou everyone again. I've tried writing and the music thing. WELL if tried happy music. I tried the sad music, but that made me feel worse :P

I've tried explaining it to this girl and she was pretty much the first one to know about my manic epsiodes. But it seems like she just wants to block it out and pretend its not happening. I don't even know if a friend like this is what i need right now. Especially a best friend. By no means will she ever be that again, time and time again she has proven to be not friend worthy.
