Dear All

I would really appreciate any advice you can offer.

In early October, I woke up feeling highly nauseous, I had a pain in my lower abdomen experienced very bad wind and burped frequently, the symptoms continued for a week and a half yet without vomiting or experiencing severe diarrhoea etc. I felt very tired and wanted just to stay lying down.

Since early October I have had pain in my lower abdomen since.

I visited my doctor; he felt around my stomach and checked for appendicitis etc. Without being able to identify a clear source of the pain, he prescribed ‘Hyoscine butyl bromide tablets’ to relief nausea and he suspected I could have IBS and scheduled me a blood test.

The tablets weren’t very effective yet I became a little better, and attempted to change my diet to be a little more varied.

The blood test results came back fine, however within the two weeks of waiting for them, I began to feel better but then experienced severe nausea and the pain came back more intensive like before.

I sore my GP again but on that occasion the pain was less, he felt around my stomach once again but we found no direct source, he suspected I could have had a bad virus and prescribed gastro resistant ‘oeprazole’ tablets as he suspected I had acid reflux, he also scheduled a urine test after I expressed concern about pain I had experienced.

The tablets helped however, the next day I briefly blacked out even though I had drunk and eaten plenty. The tablets don't kick in for an hour or two and the pain continues after breakfast and in the night.

Two week later (this week), the urine tests came back fine. Yet the pain remains, and I continue to feel tired, nausea and not 100%.

In conclusion my symptoms include:
-Lower abdominal pain (just below my belly button) that occurs the worst after eating, yet calms during the day but becomes uncomfortable throughout the night.
-Nausea when the pain occurs (I just want to stay in one position)
-Bad wind (after eating/throughout the night & when I wake up)
-Tiredness
-Lack of appetite
-Little weight loss 1-2kg (2.2-4.4 lbs) nothing concerning
-Pain urinating (previously experienced)

*Don’t know if it’s related, bit weird I know but my ears have been really sensitive and popping on random occasions, like when sitting down etc.

Thank you so much for reading, I really appreciate any advice you may have, I’m scheduled to go on holiday in twenty days, I couldn’t bare feeling like this and having to travel etc, uncomfortabley.

I'm prepared to do anything to stop this, it's so disturbing and I'm an active person + student pilot so being indoors sucks!

I don't smoke/drink and actively exercise, I was meant to cycle 40miles today but the bloated felling/constant pain remains, I just can't.

Regards

Joseph

Hi
Do you know what you were tested for and the results that might be helpful
Also have you ever been tested for celiac

It may be useful to keep a journal of what you eat as well

take care

Hello!

Many thanks for your swift response.

My blood test was to test my kidneys and liver, and it was a blood count, the results came back as normal.

The urine test was to see if I had had any infection in my bladder etc.

I haven't had any coeliac tests.

Hope this helps! Thanks!

Joseph

It does sound like IBS. To be sure you should see a GI. IBS is a diagnosis of elimination. I had the same blood tests, a colonoscopy and a endoscopy before I was diagnosed.
Good luck and have a great holiday.

Dear vh90453

Thanks for your response and insight in to how you were diagnosed. In the U.K, there's a 2x month waiting list for the special coeliac blood test, and although I have private medical insurance, it's only a couple of weeks until I go as you know.

I'm trying a gluten free diet to rule out whether it's coeliac or not, so far the diet has helped generally, but I will soon see. If I get better and better on the diet, then I will come back and apply for a test, if not then I will look to see if I have IBS.

Thanks for your help and wishes!

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I appreciate how frustrating and disconcerting this must be for you at the moment. Do NOT be worried if any test comes back negative/normal because all the tests are for other possible causes, and IBS s the diagnosis of what is left.

If you feel perturbed about travel/activies beeing curtailed and restricted by this, my advice is to be prepared for the worst that might happen......I keep an 'emergency clean-up kit' in my car incase my IBS chooses to try to spoil my ay. The kit contains a clean pair of underpants and a pack of hygeinic baby wipes. You could always add to this a pair of protective gloves (if you are particularly worried about mess), and any medication you find helpful.

I hope you get a firm diagnosis soon.

Baz

Hi
If you are trying the diet plaese make sure you do not get a stitch of gluten any where on cupboards knives ect That is the only way yu will have to read labels on everything and know what you are looking for.......
If you feel this is it and you go for the tests you will need to have been back on the gluten for some time around 6 weeks at least...........
And bare in mind if damage is mild it may not show up...

Good luck
