I have been taking Fosomax for about 3 months now for Osteopenia. I am 46.I hve noticed alot of hair loss and eyelash loss. Some redness in my cheeks as well. Has anyone had skin or hair changes since on this med? Also just found out that you can take this drug once yearly by IV injection.

FOSAMAX is for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis (thinning of bone) in
postmenopausal women.to the best of my knowledge fosamax was trialed for safety and effectiveness only in postmenopausal women.i bring this up because of your age ......from what i have read about fosamax hair loss is not a known side effect....but you can call merck and ask if they have had any reports of hair loss from patients taking the drug

Hi
I read the active ingredient in Fosamax is the same used in a cleaning solution that removes calcium& lime deposits & a furnace man discovered his cleaning solution wk'd well to do this/ My Dr agreed this is the beginning of fosamax. Scarey, huh? I found the same info here on a link.

Yikes! So thats the stuff I'd be putting into
my anxiety-filled stomach!!
I told my gyno about hair loss & he said"you

Aren't we better off informed?

OK ladies......I've argued the hair-loss "thing" w/my Rhumo & 2 diff. MD's & they all say, NO, hair loss will NOT happen w/Fosomax OR Actonel. Eventho, I've really had some problems losing my hair. They say it's due to post-menapause!!!!UGH. I called Merck & Procter & they both said, it is not a known side effect of either drug. Well....guess what....maybe...not enough studies have been done re:hair loss. With all of the women reporting this as a side effect, I'd surely investigate, PROCTER & MERCK!!!!!!!!!. It makes me very angry to think the stuff they are shoving down our throats could be doing these horrible things to us!!!!. What about the cleaning agent Bitsy? Can you provide what chemical it is & where it is found (i.e.) what product, Lysol, Mr. Clean, 409, etc???? If I find this to be true, I will never take another Actonel. I took one 2 weeks ago, after being off for 2 months, & now have been on an IBS kick, so I have not taken the next one. Well, the weight gain goes on, but that could be due to the stomach problems I have, which could be due to inflammation from bisphosphonates? Who knows. Anymore input appreciated. GOD BLESS AMERICA

yes, it ise away& are others that remove soap scum. The thought here is it destroys the osteoclast allowing the osteoblasts start growing& per my DR is the 2 safest out there cause it goes directly to the bones, is not excreted thru the liver or kidney, have been arond a long time & the others haven't. as long as u take this properly, side effects are small. I will TRY it& see how it affects me/ It also builds bones, some ,in 3 months taken once a wk. I have to do something. It also is the only 2 that ont destrot major organs; ie liver& kidneys

:)I took Fosomax one time. Have had hives, rash, tingling of face, itching, headache. Felt as if my whole system had been poisoned. I am still suffering with the skin problems a week later. Has anyone else had these symptoms. Have decided to take calcium, exercise, eat better diet to address my osteopenia. Anyone else going this route with results?

Sorry about messing up with posting, will retry this.. anyway, about Fosamax, I was on it 2 different times. Talked to dr. and told her it causes a new kind of back pain in the bones. She said go off, then try and see if it really is the Fosamax. It was, and I have enough back pain. It was a pain in the bones. Also, cannot take calcitonin because of stuffiness. It wasn't an alternative and you can begin to have hair loss as I did. Wat too scary. Hair loss is real. I think we need to hold out hope for Zometa end of year??

I recently started taking Fosamax about a month ago and am noticing eyebrow loss. So is my sister who started the drug about a year ago. I'm trying to track down the culprit. I've also been taking Progesterone for about a year after going off Premarin. One Internet site listed Progesterone as a possible cause of eyebrow loss, but frankly didn't notice this problem until after taking Fosamax.
As for that doctor who said his patient was reading too much, maybe he isn't reading enough!

nj girl,
Check out more of the threads here and you will see that many people have reported hair loss on Fosamax. Are you taking the synthetic or natural Progesterone?

Peregrine,
In answer to your question, I'm taking a natural form of progesterone, Progesta-care, 20 mg in pump form. Fosomax is beginning to scare me--pretty much plan to go off it, before I lose my eyebrows permanently!
