I have had ibs for 8 years. A year ago i had an episode of what i thought was ibs, i had severe stomach pain, diarrohea and lots of rectal bleeding, went to g-docs and was told it was just ibs. Had another similar episode a month later, my doc sent me to hospital for tests. I had a sigmoid colonscopy, scans etc, surgeon said i have beginnings of diverticular disease and scheduled me for barium enema, the results came back clear, which i cant understand. Went to doc several more times to be told i have ibs not diverticular disease. I am now having these episodes on a weekly basis, severe stomach pain, constipation, diarrohea, fever, headaches, some rectal bleeding and vomiting with pain that bad i feel like im going to pass out. Doc never gives me anything but painkillers which just constipate me.Have been to doc countless times , then to be told i dont have ibs i have diverticular disease. Had another episode 2 days ago, went to doc again to be told that i have ibs and diverticular disease, i dont know if im coming or going. Hopefully someone can throw some light on the subject for me. :(

Sorry about your dilemma. IBS never causes bleeding. IBS is a diagnosis of elimination, everything else has to be ruled out first. The only way to do that thoroughly is by a full colonoscopy. The symptoms you describe could be diverticulitus, if this is the case and you are having fevers etc. the diverticuli is probably infected and needs to be treated now. I'm not sure about the vomiting, you may also need an endoscopy. I'm sure it's possible to have both at the same time. Bleeding from the bowel is never normal and needs to be thoroughly investigated. I would change Doctors, he's giving you the run around. All the best.

I have both diverticular disease and IBS. My doctor initially put off surgery because he said it would aggravate my IBS. I finally had a severe attack resulting in an abscess and after healing, had the surgery.
He was right, my IBS does seems to flare up but the surgery eliminated the sick feeling and constant pain in my lower left quadrant.
I never had rectal bleeding or vomiting (thank God) but I do sometimes have some nausea as well as some severe indigestion and diarrhea about two or three times a week. These are probably from the IBS.
I agree, a second (or third) opinion, including a full endoscopy and CT scan with contrast are probably a good idea. Hope all goes well.

Nausea and indigestion is not retated to IBS.
The Rome II criteria is the recognized symptoms Internationally. It is a Lower Bowel Syndrome that is not related to the upper part of the digestive system.
Diverticular pockets can certainly form in the colon and associated with IBS but not caused by it.
There is now on the market a very high potency probiotic supplement -- VSL#3 -- that is being used to significantly help IBS.

I have IBS and at times I do get severe pain, but I think you will find diverticulitis pain is worse ( I've never had it though). I wouldn't leave it until after Christmas, if you do in fact have diverticulitis it needs to be treated now. I don't mean to scare you but if left it can have serious consequences . The pain from diverticular disease is usually in the lower left quadrant. Having a fever along with your other symptoms does suggest the diverticular is infected. Please don't wait too long. All the best.

I had both diverticulitis and IBS i have seen multipal doctors for this the pain on the left side was sever i would buckle in pain , years went bye and i moved to ohio and found a gastero doc here that recommend colon resection surgery to remove the bad part , i was left with 7 inches of colon , upon going home a week later i was in so much pain i couldnt even walk went back to the same surgeon and she told me that i have a leak in the colon boy was i messed up ended up on vent and got blood clots in lungs and legs ...was in hosp for 3months , finally my prayers were answered i got to go home and all was well but with a colostomy bag , i was so confused and tramamized by what all happen i couldnt eat , anyway been a year since the bad experience and i found a great doctor to reverse the colostomy on nov 4 2008, and its been 5 weeks and i am doing great , no pain meds stomach all scabbed over no infections and our shopping and doing things i missed doing over another docs mistake , all i can say be safe on your decision with the doc preforming the sugery colon surgery isnt something to play with very painfull when things go wrong if you live in ohio near the dayton area i can give u the name of a wonderful doc that has done this surgery for yrs and yrs

Not any more since I had the surgery, but before, my attacks were so severe I couldn't move. Definitely a 10 on the pain scale.
Please don't wait, I tried to "tough it out" the last time. It ended up that I had a severe abscess that had ruptured, leaking waste product into my abdominal cavity. The doctor later told me that I had been a day and a half from going into septic shock. I could have died.
I hope you get treated and get to feeling better.

Lp299v is the flagship of all pre-/probiotics. Two tablets a day will fix 98% of all IBS symptoms and in a matter of weeks you will feel so much better. I, the greatest sceptic ever, suffered through many bouts of painful IBS attacks, did not think there was any product that could help me, but I am now so much better than ever before. No, I am not being paid for this testimonial!
