I originally posted on general health but thought I might have better luck here since this seems to be the nervous system.
I have a 14 year old son, yesterday at school at the end of the school day he said he felt like he was gong numb all over starting at his feel working its way up to his hands. I was at work but he called me and said he felt numb all over and my husband said his face had red splotches all over it. Maybe from the cold outside I don't know?
Took him to the doctor today and he said in children and teens it is almost always stress and anxiety related. He has very little strength in his hands, I asked him to squeeze my hands and he couldn't. He said his neck and back were hurting but have gone away now but he said his back hurt when he moved his neck.
He has been under stress at school and has anxiety issues, especialy with his coaches he has been so stressed out lately. His coaches make fun of him and he said they've been laughing at him lately when he exercises. He is overweight and has problems with his knees specifically his kneecaps keep popping out of place and we have to go the chiropractor for an adjustment on his knees often.
I completely trust his pediatrician, he's never been wrong and really genuinely cares about his patients so I trust his judgement. He is one in a million. But my son is worried and I can't seem to reassure him, he says he keeps feeling like something bad is going to happen and is really on the edge of a major panic attack tonight. Why is he still numb, can stress and anxiety work that much havoc on your body? The doctor told him to take a Tylenol if he got really uncomfortable but nothing else. He explained to the doctor that he felt numb all over and every few minutes felt this jolt of pain all over his body.
He was lying down on his stomach and said next thing he knows he felt like he blacked out for a couple of minutes and came to but wasn't tired. Thats how he explained it to me. The doctor did a finger prick blood test and said they would run some testing but didn't say what for. They were supposed to call with results today but never called back and that worries me even more. What could he be testing for? I want answers just as badly as my son does I just want to cry I am so scared!

HI Hamilton92,

I am sorry no-one has replied to you - I am usually on the ptsd board but have a possible brain tumour so came here for a look see -

Yes extreme anxiety can cause dizziness and numbness but not usually pain - if you are not happy with what your doc has told you (and hopefully you have heard more by now) why not ask for a neck and spine x ray just to be sure - have you told the doc about the blackout? if not then I would do so - anyway I hope that this is all sorted for you by now and that your son is better MBC

Hi there!

This post is from a while ago and likely there have been some answers found (: When I was first diagnosed with nocturnal seizures ~4mos ago, my neurologist did all kinds of tests with strength in my hands and back and legs. My seizures are caused (very, very likely - how can we ever know for sure :S) by extreme stress, and stress and anxiety in a person's life, especially on that of a teenager only beginning to develop an identity, make friends, etc. can be unbelievably detrimental. I hope you can find a way to lessen the stress in your son's life and have found some concrete answers for his symptoms.
