Make her see a Doctor. It may be just a chest infection, but with a long smoking history you cant be too careful. Good luck.

It should not be ignored.
See the DR, check it out,
AND even if no check for any cancer is warrented, ask for it anyway.

was this the first time your mom spit blood?
is your mom always fatigued? does she have a cough? has she lost weight?
is she wheezing? is her breathing shallow?
you said she always has pains, what type of pains?
the above symptoms are related to cancer of the lungs, and spitting blood is also one of them.
though, it can be a sign of very many other things.
does your mom have a cold? is her nose congested? does she have allergies?
post nasal drip? a dry throat?
it can be something serious or something not serious.
can she tell that it was blood from deep within the lungs, sometimes your throat is
dry and a harsh cough will show a little blood on the tissue when you spit because your throat is irritated.
if she is spitting blood it can also be coming from the stomach.
is the blood bright red? is it dark?
keep an eye on it, and make sure she sees the doctor if it continues.

Dont wait to see if it continues. GO NOW.... this is not something that should be left. Get her to a Doctor as soon as possible. It may not be anything, but its not right to be spitting blood.
