I don't know how many mascara one should normally own at one time, but i am told I have way too many and I just couldn't stop buying them. Anyone shares the same enthusiasm as I am?
Here is what I have right now:
Maybelline XXXL
Laura Mercier (volume)
Lancome (L'Extrême)
Fasio
Clarins (wonder length)
UNT (XTREMECILS)
DiorShow
Loreal (don't remember the name, but with dual brushes)
Is 8 mascara at the time too many for a woman?
Now be honest...

there is a shelf life for mascara so to own all at the same time may be a waste of money.
Each time you open and apply you run the chance of bateria being inter-mixed with tube, especially if you have any type of eye problem already.
All mascara should be discarded after 3 months -- if you have any longer than that -- throw it out.

Well, you can have as many as you want but it's really unnecessary. I think more then two is excessive since most mascaras are designed to do the same thing - make your lashes thicker and longer. Some work better than others, of course. So two different kinds is okay... like one with a big brush and another with a small brush.
I currently have four different ones and feel like I'm wasting money and products because mascaras are only good for about three months and after that you're supposed to throw them out. I could never use all four tubes in three months. And eventually I will have to throw a couple of them out before I have the chance to use them up because they will expire or dry up.
Though I don't really follow the three month rule (who can keep track?) so a lot of times I use them way past that if they're still good. I've never had eye problems or infections from doing this but should probably avoid doing it in the future.

yeah, but i can never learn how to put false lashes on properly.
btw, is the 3 months rule a way for cosmetic company to sell more masacara (since it takes so long to use one up), or is it really true not to use it after 3 months? I have used many of them way pass 3 months, but never had any problems...

I would have to agree that the 3 month rule is overemphasizes so that they will sell more. I've used 6 month old mascara that I never opened, or opened, used once and then didn't use it again till months later. I never had problems. They say it's because of the bacteria and whatnot... well, I don't use eye makeup if I'm having eye problems and I always put mascara on freshly cleansed face/eyes, don't share it with others, and don't reapply it throughout the day.
I guess you could potentially get an infection but that can happen any time if you think about it. So far I haven't experienced one or know anyone else who uses mascaras.
From personal experience I would say that 6months is more reasonable. My mascaras usually last for that long before they start to dry up, which would also mean that it's probably running out.

I'll admit that I don't always follow the rules about when to toss out makeup, and I've never had a problem either. I just throw out anything that dries up, has the color separating, smells weird, etc. It's not like I'm keeping ancient products or anything though!
I have ended up with a LOT of eyeshadows. I just found so many I liked and some were discontinued, so I stocked up on them and kept sealed ones to use when I run out if they were a favorite. Since I usually only have one or two mascaras, I usually do have to replace mine every couple of months because I use it up quickly. I like to wear 2-3 coats of mascara, so I definitely have to replace it often.

I agree. I think that mascara tells you when to throw it - it gets dry and clumpy....in my expereince about 4-6 months. I sometimes add a a tiny bit of water just to thin it out but once it clumps again thats when I throw it. I cant do false lashes either...end up looking like a monster from the lagoon!
