Hello fellow acid reflux sufferers! I have been suffering with GERD for 22 years. It started when I was 11. At times medications really helped get it under control. I have taken just about everything: pepcid, prilosec, propulsid, nexium, tums, pepto, prevacid, etc. After a time they quit working and my reflux got even worse when I tried to go back on them. At times my reflux has been so bad I've had to sleep sitting up for weeks at a time and have had extreme difficulty eating and even drinking water, not to mention talking or walking around. YOu'd never think it could be that debilitating but I'm sure many on this board have experienced worse.
In any case, throughout my own experience and reading over the years, I've found there are many things that can cause GERD which some of you may have already looked into but others may not have considered. Celiac disease, for starters. Any kind of food sensitivity can cause GERD. I know there is a blood test called Ige or something like that which tests for these sensitivities. Celiac is a blood test as well, just worth a shot. Dairy and eggs are also big allergens for many people.
Another cause can be h pylori, make sure to rule it out as that can be easily solved with antibiotics.
Gall stones are another cause, as is systemic candida or yeast. I believe my issues stem from a spastic, very twisted colon that aggravates my hiatal hernia. For some reason, when my bowels are trying to move, I have a lot of acid reflux. Anyone else experience this?
A word about antacids and antacid meds--if you take these for years and overalkalanize your body's ph, your body will eventually produce even more acid and an unhealthy, bacterial environment can be created in your gut from over alkalinization. There are natural sources, like licorice root, that you can get at the health food store, that help heal the esophagus without that alkalinizing affect.
I am a newbie, so all of this may have been posted before. If so, I apologize for making anyone yawn, lol!

Welcome gentille57. There are plenty of us suffering. Thanks for your imput. It can be debillitating that is for sure. I am really going through the wringer with the mucus thing. I just can't get it all cleared up. I don't know if this will go on forever or not. But I am going to get the endoscopy done and all the tests. I can't get in until January. I am trying not to panic. Sometimes I feel like it effects my breathing. The constant clearing is annoying me and my husband. I am about ready to sleep in another room.
So I will try any homopathic remedies I can. If you know of any please post them. Thanks! I am trying to de yeast my body and I take probiotics as well.

Gentille,
You mentioned something about your acid reflux gets worse when your bowels are trying to move. I have something very similar to this that the doctors are baffled about. Could you explain in more detail what happens to you when you get this problem?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob!
Thanks for sharing. I have yet to meet someone who experiences acid reflux with bowels movements. Two colonoscopies over the years showed the same report: a "tortuously twisted colon." both times they had to stop and start the scope, inching it forward because my intestines spasmed so much. I was told by a dr when I was 11 that when my bowels move, it creates spasms that make the acid come up. I have thought all this time that he was dead on, despite what a myriad of other doctors have told me over the years. It is weird what sometimes helps my reflux--moving around, exercise, sometimes swallowing, sometimes pressing my tongue to the roof of my mouth/sucking on something--points to a muscular issue in my opinion although at times yeast killers have helped. Sometimes weight can aggravate reflux, but I am very thin so it's not that. I am stymied. All I know is that sitting still and laying down, even with my bed raised, can greatly aggravate my reflux.
I wrestle with severe chronic constipation. When my bowels are stimulated to go, it's like they over react, go into spasm, and voila! tight chest, knotted and burning stomach, up the acid comes. Not sure how else to describe what happens. Sometimes anti inflammatories like nordic naturals jr 3-6-9, and country life ultra omega fish oil caps help. It seems like calming spasms calms the reflux, but I can't take anti spasmodics like bentyl and levbid because they constipate me even worse. Then I need even more stimulation to go, and the whole viscious cycle starts all over again. I do not have chron's, etc; I've only been diagnosed with spastic colitis.
Hope that helps and answers your question, feel free to ask any more or to share what you suffer with. I am desperate for answers. I am even looking into the possbility of sjogren's syndrome, because of chronic dry eye, dry nose, and even dry stools.

I know a lot of people use licorice root and it seems to help. It comes in a liquid, I believe. shouldnt' be too hard to get. I am unable to take it because of interstitial cystitis/chronic inflammation of urinary tract. Everything I eat or drink can make me feel like I have a nasty bladder infection, so I am limited. One thing that sometimes helps me is nordic naturals jr. 3-6-9. It is liquid fish oil for kids. Sometimes ultra omegas by country life help; be careful, if your reflux is bad, puncture the gel cap and squirt it out into water rather than swallowing it Could be painful to get down even though it's not that big. I've had reflux flare for hours just from swallowing something like that when my chest is tight. The omega does not taste great but I am used to it. The nordic is lemon flavored; I thought the citrus would bother my stomach but it hasn't. Maybe try small amounts at first and see how your stomach takes it.
I know there are other natural healers but I'm not sure what they are; I will let you know if I find out
I am fortunate not to have had as much of the mucous, but when my reflux is bad, I literally get a full blown head cold. It irritates my throat and mucous membranes and I get very congested, nasal drip, the works. sheesh

I have a couple of simple suggestions which are natural and which may help the acid reflux. I used to take Prevacid daily until I discovered how they work which I didn't like. I first used a supplement I read about in a magazine that is made from orange peel - I think it is orange peel extract. I took that for a month and then I also use organic apple cider vinegar before meals. If I was even 1/2 hour late taking Prevacid, I knew it - and I now no longer have to use it just from taking the orange peel extract for a month and then using the ACV. Try it - it sure can't hurt.

Gentille,
The problem you have is somewhat like what I have with some bowel movements. The problem that I have is sometimes when I have to have a bowel movement (or have bad gas), my heart rate starts to rise and I start to get pain and numbness in my left arm and some esophageal pain/spasms (The problem usually is at noght while I am sleeping). I know the problem sounds like it is heart related but I have had stress tests, EKG, ultrasound and cardiac cath and they all came up clean. I also had a colonoscopy which came up clean. It seems to be worse when I eat high fatty foods or other foods like caffeine, chocolate or spicy foods. My gastro doctor says that he believes that my intestinal system is spasming. Once I have a bowel movement or get rid of the gas, everything goes back to normal within 10 mintues to an hour. It seems that taking probiotics and Magnesium supplements has helped me alot. I used to get the attacks 2-3 times a week. Now I get them about once a month. Let me know if any of this sounds like what happens to you.

My doctors and I believe my reflux and gastritis is also related to chronic constipation. Most likely I have bile reflux which is triggered by IBS-C. So after failing to find any relief using the typical treatment protocol for gerds I directed my efforts toward treating IBS-C. I have finally made some progress and feeling much better. For me finding the right combination of probiotics, magnesium and fiber supplements have made a huge difference.
I tried a lots of different probiotics but only one really made a noticeable difference its a product called "Goodbelly" that contains the probiotic strain Lp299v. You owe it to yourself to do a little research on Lp299v and try it if it's available in your area. I believe this product deserves most of the credit for the relief I'm currently experiencing.
I also tried a number of different magnesium supplements but have had the best luck using Natural Calm right before bedtime. It helps with the sleep as well as with the "C". You'll have to gradually increase your dosage of magnesium until you find what's right for you. For me I can tolerate 1g dosages of magnesium citrate before I reach bowel tolerance. I know of others can only tolerate a 200mg single dosage.
As for the fiber supplements I've been happy with the benifiber it's easy for me to take and I've not had any problems with it.

I understand about the heart thing as I frequently experience a more rapid heart beat with bowel movemetns. I thought I was crazy. Soemtimes I get chills and cold sweating. I have been on a probiotic program for six and a half years. I am still only able to tolerate very small amounts, and can't even do that on a regular basis. They give me a lot of heartburn. It is so vexing, it seems like everything gives me heartburn. so does magnesium. Just can't seem to get my bowels to move without all the spasms and heartburn. Unfortunatley, the reflux does not abate with the passing of stool. Soemtimes the more days in a row I go, the worse it gets, although this has gotten a little better over the years. Good grief, I feel like such a strange case!
I am so glad you are doing better, makes me wonder if I should keep up with the probiotics, but I am discouraged and tired of the reflux they cause. It isn't just them though, it's anything that makes my bowels move. a new doc wants to try me on miralax
I appreciate your input

Would you tell me what IBS-C means? I have been seeing that lately in my searches and don't know what the C is for. What is bile reflux? How is the strain Lp299v different from say, acidophilus or bifidus, etc?
Thank your respodning to my thread, I appreciate it

Gentille,
I have found that taking the probiotics in the morning with something to eat helps with absorption and I have not had a reflux problem while taking it. I have also found that taking a magnesium supplement that includes calcium and zinc seems to work best. I have read that the calcium helps with the absorption rate. I take about 600 mg of magnesium at night right before bed. Make sure you drink a full glass of water with it. Teh magnesium has really helped with the spasms and the probiotics with keeping my digestion system regular.
I have also experienced the sweating and cold chills. The first time it happened, I thought for sure I was having a heart attack. Went to the emergency room and everything checked out fine. I have found that eating a good amount of fiber, 20-30 grams a day really helps. Try to include as much soluble fiber as possible.
Hope all this helps you out.

I first read about using apple cider vinegar for GERD in Kevin Trudeau's "Natural Cure..." book. The orange peel extract thing is new. I'll have to look into that. And you're right. They certainly can't hurt, since they're both natural items. Thanks

Gentille57,
IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is a diagnosis that is given to folks with lower digestive issues as opposed to upper digestive after you have had tests (specifically a colonscopy) to rule out anything else.
Peoiple who have IBS tend to have either IBS-C which means they deal with chronic constipation or IBS-D which is the opposite problem having diarrhea and then some folks have IBS-A which means they alternate between both C and D.
Bile reflux is when you reflux bile instead of acid. There is a special test called an impedance test to determine if you are refluxing bile instead of acid.
Have you had an upper endoscopy to see if you have any erosive esophgitis from the acid reflux? what about the Bravo test? I was surprised when I had my first scope that the doctor said I had EE - I didn't really have lots of burning or liquid burps with my indigestion just the awful center chest pains and pain in my left upper gut (my term for the area above my waist under my left breast), indescribable belching and like you the onset of the feeling of an awful head cold with a runny nose and postnasal drip etc. My Bravo test definitley showed that I had GERD and acid reflux and my GI said that I would need to be on PPI's for life - not something I want to have to do. So far I've been on a 40mg twice a day of first Protonix and now Nexium for the last 3 years. I try to do all the "right" things i.e. follow a GERD diet, have my bed elevated, lost 52 pounds, don't eat too soon before going to bed, but there are still times that I wind up in total agony from my GERD. And then it seems to upset my lower GI tract and my IBS kicks in. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to eat! And this is from someone who loves to cook and eat out etc.
The best to all of you - it is nice to meet you all and hear similar experiences. doesn't cure you but somehow is comforting to know you are not alone in this vicious cycle of GER and IBS. I guess the old saying "misery loves company" is very true. Thank goodness for message boards!;)

Just a precaution--with anything you try--the natural stuff--please start out with a small amount and see how you respond. give yourself a good hour. I've had things increase my reflux right at first and then it tapers off, and I've had things improve my acid reflux right off and then it get worse in about an hour. You never know how something will affect your stomach, esp if you are not certain what is causing the reflux. Just a word to proceed carefully, I hope soemthing helps!!

Gentille57,
IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is a diagnosis that is given to folks with lower digestive issues as opposed to upper digestive after you have had tests (specifically a colonscopy) to rule out anything else.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I learned years ago with my bladder disease to be very proactive about your own health, educating yourself, etc. Most docs answer your questions over their shoulder as they're heading for the door, if you know what I mean. You're the one that has to go home and live with a condition while they go on to their next patient. At least that has been my unfortunate experience with many doctors.
Ok, I must have IBS-C, I have bad constipation. Just an aside--have you ever tried drinking warm or slightly hot water in the morning or sitting on heat? (like one of those heat up rice bags for your neck, etc) Heat can be stimulating to the bowels. I didn't know there was a test for acid vs bile reflux. I am going to ask about that at my next appt. right now they are testing me for gall stones and celiac disease.
I have had four endoscopies over the years. I am finally starting to show some irritation from the GERD, which I find miraculous considering how severe and long lasting some of my bouts with reflux have been over the years. And of course I have hiatal hernia which was found ages ago. What is the BRAVO test?
I understand about the sinuses; when reflux gets bad up my nose the resulting "head cold" can be one of the most miserable aspects of this disease.
Say you have bile reflux--what does that mean?
thanks again

My sister experienced very bad acid reflux and was on meds until she started drinking organic apple cider vinegar. The weak acid in ACV helped her digestive issues since she was not secreting enough natural acid to break down her foods. In addition, she started eating foods with a higher alkaline level to help balance her pH. After two years of a rigid diet of organic unprocessed foods and a daily dose of acv, she is off meds and very happy. No more pain.

I keep hearing over and over that the organic apple cidar vinegar works super for acid reflux. Is anyone else finding that it really does? Has anyone been able to go off meds and just drink that? Just wanting to hear a success story! There is one! Lets hear some more! Thanks!

Where can you get orange peel extract ?I am in Canada.
I have tried apple cider vinegar but there was no change. Also I tried prevacid, nexium but no relief and many others,I am trying ranitidine an old drug but helped a year ago.

If some is on this list studies polypharmacy please comment,if this amount of medication can lead to acid reflux.

I have a question...does alfredo sauce cause reflux to act up or the mucus to go crazy? I made the mistake of having salad with Italian oil dressing and some alfredo with white sauce. It is a few hours later and my mucus production is OUT OF CONTROL!! Eeh gads! Learning this special diet is driving me crazy. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The sauce could very well have made your LPR go whacko but the alfredo will do a number on you too. Some days just lettuce alone will choke me to death! It is "very" frustrating to first off try and follow the rules and diet but when you can get away with it one time and not the next is the worst. I have really keep a food journal for months and I still can't figure out any rhyme or reason why my LPR goes out of control. Sure, there are a few things that I do eat and know I will get symptoms of uncontrolable coughing and drowning in mucus. Usually, the good things! Then one the other hand, I can drink Coke all day long and feel great. Never has bothered me. The Starbucks is a different story and I'm addicted to the stuff. My Dr. say's to eat what I want and go from there as we are all different. Personally, I will suffer a little misery for chocolate! Good Luck.

Thanks Char! I appreciate you writing back to me. I am afraid my cheating has cost me dearly. It is nearly 2 am and I am not going to bed yet. I have mucus just going like crazy. The alfredo, salad with dressing and a little tiny bit of white chocolate cheesecake just has created this monster for hours. I am seeing that I have to get really strict again tomorrow. :(
My poor daughter came over tonight and she is only 19 and showing the same pattern as me. She said she has had a whole bottle of pepto bismo over the last couple of days. I feel so bad if she ends up with these problems. Her older sister, my other daughter has the same problem too.

Well, you could have chatted with me at 2 am.......I had the same problem. Ate a McDonald breakfast yesterday morn and had soooo much mucus. Was trying to clean house good after all the holidays and that only made it worse. Bending and lifting stuff, like scrub the floors and carpet. I woke up this morn with horrible headache and sinus pressure. Last night, I finally just had to do saline rinses over and over to try and get all the thick mucus out. A bit hoarse today and sure all the hacking, clearing my throat stuff is the cause. Oh! I had bad heartburn on top of all that and not a thing in the house to use except baking soda. Bet I hit that drug store early this morn and stock up.
Everyone try and have a great day. New Year and maybe the one we all get well!

HI Sallu! Yes I think exercise can only help the acid reflux problem. I have lost 11 pounds since November and have changed my diet radically. I have minimal symptoms...I mean they are bearable. I think as a loose they other 20 off my stomach it will help my reflux. I really think mine is weight and stress. I can't wait to have a flat stomach. I am not gonna give up. You can do it too!

I also forgot to mention that a good friend of mine had reflux come on quite suddenly in the summer and had to take medication. SHe then heard from someone that acidophilus (the good bacteria--you can get it in capsules) can help--she started taking it and felt better within days. She is now off the medication but still taking the acidophilus. It's also good in general for immunity and a healthy digestive system. You can get it at a health food store but get a good brand and keep it in the fridge. A lot of the yoghurts out there now boast containing this, and they do, but i have heard that you need to eat a ton of it to get the same benefit as two capsules per day. Plus, the dairy can bother some people as well.

pROBIOTICS AND Acidophilus are really the same thing......Probiotics is the more general word whereas there can be many types of the good bacteria in them, e.g. acidophilus, bifidus, etc.

Have you tried taking protonix? This a prescription drug more powerful than over the counter anti acids. I took this for over a year and it helped tremendously. I also put myself on an oatmeal diet and it is terrific for digestive disorders like this. I eat 2-3cups of oatmeal (plain oatmeal, not the flavored kind) a day. Probiotics works great too, but you have to take protonix too. Over-the-counters aren't always strong enough.

I took Protonix for a couple years. It didn't help when the reflux got bad. Of course the PPI's work differently for everyone.
I really like the Prevacid best. Took care of things completely for a while and is not the "best of the worst" for me since nothing completely works. I like the Solutabs 30 mg twice a day. It contains aspartame though. The Prevacid delayed-release capsules don't list it as ingredient though. Might be another one to consider.
My advice: Stay away from Nexium. Some swear by it, but it made me sick, sick, sick.

I have the same problem. Actually I've had the symptoms off and on for years. I just never had a name for it. In past years it was less frequent, so I didn't go to an MD for it.
The phlegm drives me nuts. I'm constantly trying to 'get it down' and swallow it, or to 'get it up' to expel it. I can't do either. I find that I get short of breath when I have the phlegm for any extended period of time. It seems to interfere with my trachea. It comes and goes, sometimes it lasts for several days, sometimes it only for a few hours at a time. I, too, am constantly clearing my throat. I've been taking Prilosec 2X a day for about 7 months. I really don't believe that Prilosec is helping to clear it. I do find that when I'm active, walking, or golfing, it seems to clear. Or, maybe I don't dwell on it. I also find that it is exasperated by nerves, or anxious feelings.
I just take it one day at a time. Judy

Hi Judy! Ya I don't think that Prilosec works for everyone. Sometimes I really think the side effects are worse than what is actually going on. I just can't handle it. I have the mucus and I found it odd that the nurse at the Endoscopy place said she had never heard of mucus being a symptom of acid reflux. Isn't that crazy?

I have mentioned this before. Take one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in 8oz of water first thing in the morning, then the same dosage 30 minutes before your evening meal. ACV is a weak acid and it helps digest strong acids (processed food and meats) turning them into an alkaline ash. This helps your pH balance. It may seem too simple, but it has worked for several people in my family. Definitely worth a try, and better than taking prescription drugs.

Hi T,
That is, indeed, strange. I went to see an ENT because of a constant, annoying, post nasal drip. When I told the ENT that I had this annoying mucous, she immediately said, "You most likely have esophageal reflux." I had never heard of it. She told me that esophageal reflux is one of the most common complaints she sees in her office. Apparently, esophageal reflux is not always accompanied by a 'heartburn' burning sensation. She said that the body produces the mucous to protect the esophagus from the acid.
If they can cure the reflux, the mucous will go away. She also told me that sometimes it takes a while to try various pills to rid the acid. She said that diet is also key. I do find a relation to what I eat. And I think coffee is the worst offender...damn!
I think I'll try Nexium next.

I have acid reflux for at least 15 years I have taken all major drugs including PPI,but nothing helps, anything with sugar aggrevates it,Idont bring up major amounts of reflux but it is constantly in my mouth.
Recently I have taken a tablespoon of common apple cider before I eat and it seems to help, but I am still taking a PPI.
Question- when should I stop the PPI,how much apple cider should I be taken and when and for how long?

I am ready to try the apple cidar vinegar in water faithfully now. Even though I got scoped on Friday and the doctor found nothing. I still have the reflux. I have been so careful for 3 weeks now. Tonight it has flared up. I can just feel a warm, uncomfortable feeling in my sternum area. It isn't always constant. But that is where I feel it , when I feel it. The mucus isn't too bad today. Heck one day its mucus, the next it's some burning but not much mucus. This gets weary doesn't it??:(

Hi,
I hope this reply is not too long winded for you, but to give you some background. I grew up with Bushmen (learned a lot from them on survival) and have some medical training and as a result started researching stuff and healing myself (not much loved by doctors). I once had acid reflux so bad that sometimes at night, acid would shoot up into my throat suffocating me. I started doing research and healed myself within 5 to 6 weeks. It may or may not work for everybody but here it is. Buy pure untreated, unheated honey from a health shop. If it is the absolute natural untampered with product and it will be opaque (not clear). Take 5ml (one teaspoon) three times a day before meals and minimize your intake of refined starches (white bread). As far as excess mucus is concerned have yourself tested for lactose intolerance. This is not thumb sucking because it worked for myself and some people I recommended it to. If it works for you, thank the wisdom of the ancient, now extinct Bushmen tribes.

Hello JakeV,

Sorry to go off topic, but you made a post last year about pain between your shoulder blades. Did you ever find out if it was a back problem, or was it from acid reflux?
I have pain between the shoulder blades at least a couple times a month and am thinking it is not acid related b/c I find relief from chiropractic and massage.
Thanks!

Hi Precious49,
Thanks for the input. You can even try honey, lemon and garlic for chesty coughs that won't go away. Helped me many times when I was a child. God bless.

Hi Precious49,
When I was a child, if I had a toothache, my Dad would soak a cotton ball in whiskey, and I put it on my tooth and I held it there with a clenched jaw. I liked the taste, and it seem to dull the pain. I suppose if you add whiskey to any remedy, it may not cure you, but you really won't notice or care...LOL...

Hello JakeV and apriljudy,
Jake--Garlic would be better--I'll try that--I really don't like the taste of whiskey but my son did--I'm a wine person and I do like tequila, honeyand lemon. Thanks
judy,
You are so cute. Yes a little alcohol does take the edge off. I seldom drink (but often get coughs--just like my son):D--not really-- but what you said made me laugh. Thanks

Hi binkyholder,
Just a question. When are you getting these pains between your shoulder blades? Was it after you've been sitting in front of the computer for a few hours? Just check what preceded the incidents, because if the pain is intermittent like yours and massage helps then it usually is from bad posture, such as sitting in the wrong position in front of a computer. There is a lot of stress on the muscles between the shoulder blades especially in the case of women.
You could be sitting with one shoulder higher than the other due to the mouse position being too high, to mention just one possibility.

Hello Jake,
Well, I could go weeks without the pain and then it suddenly appears and lasts about 5 days. In the morning I feel great and as the day goes on the pain appears, gets worse, and sometimes it feels like it's throbbing. My doctor said it is referred pain from the stomache. But I am questioning that b/c when I go to the chiropractor, that area of spine, T5 is out and possibly in spasm. He adjusts it and in a couple days it is gone. I know my posture isn't good, I tend to have my head forward a lot and I also lean over the counter to look at the computer during the day. Also, I know for a fact that my right shoulder is higher than the left. Seem to hold stress in that area.
So I really don't know if it is skeletal or coming from my stomache. Today I have the pain under my left rib but so far no pain in the middle of my back.
I'm hoping to get an endoscopy to see if I have an ulcer.

I too have suffered from reflux for several years. I prefer not to do drugs. I go to an alternative health Dr. and I try to use natural stuff whenever I can. I can't tell you how many natural treatments I got from people. I tried so many. Some were so nasty, I think they were worse than the reflux. I was told that Tums if the worst thing you can take. I had several health care people tell me that heartburn and reflex is caused by a LACK of acid. So when you take things like Tums or Rolaids you are making the condition worse. Any way, I discovered something by accident that has helped me greatly. I was looking for healthy snack to eat. I started to eat "Just Apricots". They are dried Apricots you can get through your local health food store. After I started eating them I discovered that when I was having attacks I would eat a small amount and the pain would go away. I guess they have just enough of the right kind of acid in there to fix the problem. I don't know if it will help anyone else but it has helped me a lot so I thought I would share in the hopes it could help someone. Not only does it seem to help but they taste better than Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, Barley power and endless other things I have tried.

Hi binkyholder,
Without sounding alarmist I would recommend that you see a specialist because by manipulating nerve ends you can kill pain (symptoms) but not the cause. Pain radiating from between the shoulder blade to the front under the ribs can have a lot of causes, even gall bladder or liver problems. So instead of having people guess the reasons rather have yourself tested for the possible causes. Prevention is better than cure. God bless.

Hello Cheryl,
Thanks so much for the info--I would like to take care of my acid reflux the natural way also. I will have to try the just apricots. My liver specialist told me to get off all unnecessary medications. He said that they are so harmful and I really have known that for a long time because of all the horrible side effects they cause me. Have a good day. precious49 God Bless You and Yours Today and EveryDay

I don't understand how vinegar, combined with anything, especially fruit juice, could possibly help alleviate acid reflux. Vinegar is an acid. I've been told not to eat any acidic foods, such as vinegar, all citrus fruits and tomatoes. I also have been told to eliminate caffeine from my diet, i.e., coffee, tea, and chocolate; and I'm not supposed to eat spicy foods. It boils down to a very boring bland diet. Even so, I get the phlegm off and on. I'll be OK for a few days, then it comes back again to drive me nuts. I do believe it is exasperated by anxiety.

Apple cider vinegar, supposedly, turns alkaline in your stomach--the only vinegar like that. So does unpasteurized honey. I wouldn't mix it with fruit juice as fruit juice is high on the scale of acid inside the body. I got this chart from a health food store that sells a certain brand of green drinks. You can find similar ones on the web....I have found it very helpful. ORGANIC black coffee is supposedly okay--it's the non-organic mixed with milk/cream and sugar that will produce more acid in your body. Herbal teas are also okay--regular can bother people. keep in mind that all of these things will not bother some people while other things that most find irritating may in fact not bother some! IT's trial and error for most!

I had two great days in a row without mucus or reflux. Then I did something stupid and had a small mocha late afternoon yesterday and a small portion of spagetti last night. Today I am paying for it. The mucus back! I have a sore area in the sternum and my chest is tender. It felt tight like anxiety was kicking in. Ugh! I hate that panic and anxiety. Is this all hooked together or something. This bland diet is gonna be tough. But I see what happens if I go off of it. At least right now.

Even after my Nissen Fundoplication, my GI doc still has me on Prevacid 2x/day and an anti-reflux diet. His list of things to avoid: fatty, greasy or fried foods; spicy foods like onions, peppers, tomato based products; caffeine drinks like coffee, tea, colas; citrus drinks; chocolate, alcohol and nicotine. Add that to the list with no raw fruits and veggies (escpecially lettuce) and no dairy because of the recently diagnosed IBS and it really makes eating well difficult.

I believe my pain is caused from forward head posture and a mildly winged scapula. After having constant upper back pain for a few months I received some physical therapy and it helped a great deal. Ultrasound Therapy and manual massage both provided me with temporary relief and made it possible to begin longer lasting rehab. Since receiving the PT I'm much better but every now and then I do something that flares it up again. It normally takes a week or two to get back to normal.
it's pretty easy to tell if you have FHP and the PT is straight forward. Basically you have to work on your posture, stretch the chest muscles and strengthen the muscles of the upper back. Don't make the mistake that I did and stretch your back when you have pain in the back. I learned that the pain is from the back being over stretched so more stretching although it seem like the thing to do is not a good idea. If you have access to a physical therapist they can evaluate your symptoms and posture and teach you how to correct your posture. If you don't have access to a PT then there is a lot of good self help info on FHP available on the net.
Good luck and if you have any other question let me know.................Red

Thanks to you both for responding. I think some of my chest tenderness is from the massages I have been giving my clients lately. I am a licensed massage therapist. My neck gets real sore and well as my back, arms and chest muscles from giving massages. But I really think some of it gets sore when I have the burning going on on my sternum area. ugh! It just gets sore. I need to schedule more massages for me as well as watch my posture.

Acid reflux or heartburn occurs when strong stomach acid leaks back up into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube which carries food from your mouth to your stomach. When you swallow, a circular band of muscle around the bottom part of the esophagus relaxes to allow food and liquid to enter into your stomach.
Normally this muscle valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is closed and keeps the digestive acid and food inside the stomach where it belongs.
However if the LES valve opens when it shouldn't, hydrochloric acid from the stomach can reflux back and touch the lining of the esophagus.
This can cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat known as acid reflux or heartburn.
Most people experience the occasional episode of heartburn and although unpleasant, it is generally nothing to worry about. Frequent or constant heartburn however can be a serious problem and is the most common symptom of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Ref: Mayo Clinic Staff, Oct 18, 2005.
Acetic acid in vinegar lowers stomach acidity (increases its pH) since acetic acid is a weaker acid than hydrochloric acid, and creates an alkaline “ash”. ACV in itself is alkaline because of its "ash" content, which means if the ACV was burned, what is left over becomes ash. When you check for the pH of that ash and dissolve it with water, the content is alkaline. Whenever our body digests anything, it undergoes oxidation, which is similar to burning and the end result is that you can determine whether the end product was alkaline or acid.
Vinegar (acetic acid along with its acetate salt) may help buffer and maintain stomach acid at a pH level of about 3.0. In this milder acidic environment, the stomach can still efficiently digest food but it causes fewer problems with the esophagus and thus less heartburn.
Improved digestion and mineral absorption from regular intake of the apple cider vinegar tonic may also play a role in reducing acid reflux.
So if you are concerned about possible side effects with prescription drugs or even over-the-counter medications, try combining some of the dietary and lifestyle changes mentioned above along with a tonic of apple cider vinegar before meals as an all natural way to alleviate occasional heartburn symptoms or as a preventative practice. Vinegar and acid reflux could be a combination that works well for you.

Gentille,
The problem you have is somewhat like what I have with some bowel movements. The problem that I have is sometimes when I have to have a bowel movement (or have bad gas), my heart rate starts to rise and I start to get pain and numbness in my left arm and some esophageal pain/spasms (The problem usually is at night while I am sleeping).
I have the same issues, was rushed into emergency when i arrived last year, my BP was sky high, my chest felt slightly painful and i had pressure in my throat. I was diagnosed with PVC's which is an irregular heart beat, but not a bad rhythm, after my 4-5 trip to emergency, same number of ECG's, an echo, My hubby and I finally looked up all the symptoms on the net, I had an esophageal spasm as I ate a sandwich that night, and we discovered gerds! My next trip to emerg, i again insisted my throat felt funny, told about the spasm, and the dr finally agreed that it could be gerds, soa barrium swallow was done and voila! GERDS! UGH!!! I still get that feeling in my chest/throat, feels like air pressure pushing from the inside up, but no burning.....but i can feel chest pain, and my heart beating irregularly, once the gas and/or BM is released, Heartbeat goes back to normal, not irregular and all is right in my world!

The acv needs to be organic unpasteurized and unfiltered. You can buy Braggs in Wholefoods or I have tested products from Body Ami and they have a free trial offer, really tastes good. I hope this helps.
