I have a huge filling that my dentist says is starting to break down, and needs to be fixed. Her suggestion is either a crown or an overlay. I don't want a crown, i've heard bad stuff and am just afraid of them. Does anyone have any stories (good or bad) regarding overlays? Do they last, are there any problems, etc?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I have never had an overlay and was never given the option by dentists and only found out about them here from other members. Supposedly they cost less and are less destructive to the tooths structure since they do not require as much filing or prepping and as a result the risk of damaging the nerve and needing a root canal is much less. My thinking is dentists never told me about this b/c they would make less money - but it could be my fillings were just so large that an overlay would not provide the proper support or protection the tooth would need, not sure.

well thanks for your reply.....I certainly do not want a root canal!
Sounds like the overlay is the less-invasive way to go......

Does anyone have more information about this? I have 3 large fillings, old ones, that my dentist wants to crown.
I have one 12 year old molar crown that she did. This crown has in the last month developed an odor. I have never had breath problems, and the odor comes and goes and is very disconcerting. I had teeth cleaned this week, and dentist scaled around crown and xrayed and did not see any decay. But the odor is still there.
So I'm reluctant to crown other teeth while I am having problems with this one crown.
Can anyone say where to find more info on overlays?
Thanks so much.
