The other day whilst at work I started to get a mild pain in one of my teeth.
(I should add that I've had cosmetic dentistry on the top front 6 teeth, 1 of which is the tooth that's hurting).
Yesterday it got much worse, causing my gum and mouth to swell up considerably with SEEEERIOUS pain thats just been eating away at me. I'm also feeling very unwell.
I went straight to the dentist yesterday morning and was told that there was indeed an infection there but due to how inflamed and swollen it was the dentist told me there wasn't anything he could do till the swelling went down.
He gave me antibiotics and painkillers. The pain is so bad I've had to go back to the chemist to get extra strong painkillers.
Also just a few minutes ago I got a strange taste in my mouth, and upon looking in the mirror I noticed that quite a lot of blood is seeping through the tooth in question. I applied a little pressure to the swollen part of the gum and a lot more blood came out.
I'm very worried about this. Is this normal? Will antibiotics alone do? I'm in so much pain. :(
Just wondering if I should seek a second opinion?
Eagerly awaiting someones reply.

I'm in the U.S., so I'm not that familar with dental plans in the U.K. However, I would say extreme pain and bleeding is truly not a normal condition. I can understand not being able to work on teeth/gums that are swollen/infected - to a degree. I'm thinking there must be some type of emergency work that can be done to alleviate pain and to stop any infection, however! I know that's what dentists here the States would do, even if it involves dealing with temporary crowns and such. If I were you, I would insist the dentist try to do something to besides just "wait it out" with antibiotics. Those can take days, and bleeding gums would tell me something is wrong now.
Good luck!

Actually what probably happened is the infection postule (like a little pimple or blister) broke - this is actually a good thing as it means the antibiotics are working and the infection is draining - this will allow the inflamation to settle down rather quickly now so the tooth can be treated. Try rinsing with warm salt water peridocally during the day as this will draw out any remaining infection which will also help lessen any recurring pain.
