Typical adult resting heart rate is 60 to 80 beats per minute. Athletes' heart rates are often lower since their hearts pump more blood per beat, so fewer beats are needed to pump the amount of blood needed at rest. Heart rate will typically be higher when resting after exercise.

A common approximation for one's maximum heart rate is 220 minus age, but each person's individual maximum heart rate may differ considerably from this approximation. When exercising, the usual rule of thumb is that one can go up to about 80% of maximum heart rate with good endurance, while exercising at a higher intensity (heart rate higher than 80% of maximum heart rate) can only be done for short sprints.
