I was trying to get a count on who thinks what is the best antispasmodic that they have ever used? Please list away as I have tried quite a few. But would love to know which ones seem to work best for others!
Also anyone have any luck on using an anti depressant to calm their stomach, like Lexapro, etc?

I use homeopathic remidies. And the best remedy that I have ever used for spasms and cramping is Magnesia Phos. -- 6X potency will do fine and it can be repeated every 35 minutes or so.
It is available at health food stores.
Regular medicine does not have anything that works as well.

Levsin has been a lifesaver for me. I also have pain meds for when it's really bad to take with the antispasmodic meds

I have been on pain meds for years for the spasms I get with my IBS. I am a chronic pain patient now and go to a PM doctor. I have had lung surgery since I started with the IBS and also now have spinal arthritis, which is very painful.
I do take Lexapro, but the doctor put me on it several years ago as more of a precaution medicine than anything else. I certainly was not depressed at the time.

Pain meds for IBS, how do you get those? My GI doc has never once suggested pain meds? Do you need to go to a pain management doc?

I have taken Levbid twice a day for the last 4 years. It keeps my spasms controlled with a few exceptions when I am flaring really bad. I got them from my GP. I told him I was having what felt like labor contractions when I was "going". I have never had any problems with side effects either.

What about belladonna/phenobarbitol? I thought I had dropped right back into the seventies!

kathy,
I have used Levbid but it did not work for me.
My doctor told me it was for spasms of the long muscles in the the colon like the transverse muscle and does not work for everyone?? My spasms were on the right side.

Harry,
I didn't realize that there were other kinds of spasms. What else is out there for antispasmodics? I guess no one has really answered the original poster's question.

Kathy,
What I have found is that spasms are caused by a lack of magnesium in your system at the cellular level. Every cell in your body contains magnesium and 66% is in the bones. But if you have much loose stools and diarrhea with IBS then you may not be properly absorbing it even though it is in alot of foods.
The best type that I have found for excellent absorption is the chelated type that bonds the magnesium or any mineral to a protein amino acid.
I like and use Carlson and Solgar that is an Albion Labs product -- that holds the International patent on this process. The daily dose is 400mgm best taken in divided doses.
Also, a fast acting product is a homeopathic remedy --Magnesia phos 6X potency. But, it may not solve a long term problem with deficiency of magnesium.

I looked up Carlson and Solgar. It looks like its Vit E. I could be wrong, but if its Vit E, that product can be bought very cheap under store brands.

orb4me,
Vitamin E ,although a very important vitamin, does not affect muscle spasms.
Both Carlson Labs and Solgar are large high Quality Vitamin Companies. Both sell wide range of vitamins, minerals and supplements.
The minerals that I was talking about is made by Albion Labs and sold to other companies for distribution.
Albion has the International patent on the Chelated process that double bonds the minerals to a protein amino acid -- glycine or lysine. This process make the mineral smaller and easier to absorb in your intestines.

I just happened on this forum since I have IBS while looking for another one on another subject. Just thought I would say that my doctor gives me Bentyl, Lomotil, and Librax. The directions on the bottle say to take 3 or 4 times a day.
But I only take the Bentyl and I take it maybe 3 times a week. I have IBS w/diarrhea but if I took all those medicines as directed I would have the opposite problem. I have never heard of the magnesium or Levsin & will look both of them up.
The Bentyl does stop the horribly painful cramps. I used to use Lomotil years ago but rarely use it now.
