I know I havent posted in awhile BUT I have been taking my Calcium with Vit D mornings and K2, magnesium and Boron later on ...followed by Strontium in the evenings. Bone Scan diagnosing osteopenia was Oct 2007..Been taking all this since then when Actonel made me sick to stomach! Today went to internist for physical and mentioned the above and BAM he put me on Evista...Not sure I want to take it...Have appt with new endo in March...Couldnt get one sooner. Anyone pleased with Evista? Of course I got scared again today..He citing studies and statistics that all osteopenia leads to osteoporosis ...etc etc...:dizzy:

Hi Mbeth, sorry I can't give you any info on Evista because I don't know much about it. But if it's just osteopenia that you have, why do your doctors insist on using drugs to treat it? Bear in mind that "osteopenia" didn't even exist prior to about 1980; it's another one of those things like "pre-hypertension" that was created to get more people on more drugs so that the pharmaceutical industry could make more money:mad:
If you're really concerned about your BMD, why not just continue with your current supplement regimen, which sounds good. As for the study that cited "all osteopenia leads to osteoporosis", who conducted the study? Probably a pharmaceutical company...

MBeth,
I did not have good luck with Evista. After the first week, my lower back pain had me in tears. That is not a common side effect, it is considered a rare side effect. One endo. said it was muscle spasm and not meds, but I have never had muscle spasms or back pain until taking Evista. Once I stopped, it took about 2 weeks to get back pain completely gone. I'm now prescription free taking calcium, silica, and just starting Strontium.

Thanks...I didn't start the Evista. I will go to new Endo in March with scan results and speak to her. It seems al docs here LOVE to put you on drugs. I still cannot believe that Internist gave me Evista and Vytorin to start new at the same time. :dizzy: I called back and spoke to PA and I would start with Zocor, which is one drug in Vytorin, at its lowest dosage for now and not Evista too!!

Please let us know how the doctor visit goes. My first endo put me on the Evista and Fosamax together. Could have been the combination, but I had terrible lower back pain. Good luck to you!

Please let us know how the doctor visit goes. My first endo put me on the Evista and Fosamax together. Could have been the combination, but I had terrible lower back pain. Good luck to you!

I have tried Calcitonin and Fosamex at different times. With both medications I got back and lower leg muscle spasms. I believe it is caused because the medications decrease bone resorption and blood calcium levels. In other words more calcium stays in the bones and as a result sometimes the blood calcium gets low. The lower calcium levels in the blood can cause muscle spasms. I am unable to tolerate calcium pills due to celiac and malabsorption issues and the calcium causes terrible cramps and stomach pain- I tried 10 different types of calcium. I am also allergic to dairy so don't get much calcium from food.

Next my endocrinologist wanted me to take Evista and I was hesitant, so she suggested Reclast, however that works the same way as Fosamex. I was afraid if I had the IV reclast I would be stuck with muscle spasms and low calcium for a long time since Reclast lasts for one year, so haven't done it.

I have just started taking Evista and so far no side effects, not even the hot flashes my MD told me about. In the two years that I haven't taken anything for osteo, I have been started on hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone for addison's disease, and my bone density has become worse. I do get calcium IV every two weeks along with some other vitamins and minerals that were low.

I have also ordered the silica powder (have not received it yet) on line and plan to try strontium.

Hmmmm.....interesting note about the "pain in lower back".....

I have just finished the 2 years of Forteo injections (DID show improvement that I'll post later!!)

I had some success with Evista before being put on the Forteo...so the Dr. put me back on it. I've been wondering exactly what I'd done to make my lower back hurt so bad...it's difficult even getting up and down!

Think I'll make a few phone calls today! Thanks for mentioning this texastechex.......Pam;)

Please let me know what you find out. I know it is considered a rare side effect, but I had so much pain.
