I saw a recent article, Jan 2nd that a Univeristy school of Denistry (not sure if I can post the name) is seeing 2-3 patients with bisphosphonate related Jaw necrosis who are taking Fosamax. This is scary.
If anyone can tell me whether I can post more identifying information I'll do that. Thanks

Hi Taape: I saw the same article out of the Univ of So Cal school of Dentistry. You can also read it at the Journal of American Dental Assoc. (JADA).
How are you, did you ever find a treatment? It looks like denosumab may get approved, don't know if you are interested. Amgen submitted a NDA (new drug application) to the FDA last Friday. From what I've read it usually takes the FDA 10 months to makes a decision on NDA's.
Hope you are ok!

Hi Desertbloom,
I'm still continuing with Calcium supplements, foods with dairy, exercise. I see the specialist on Feb 10th (I put it off until then). I might be interested in Denosumab. Does a new drug application mean that if accepted they then start clinical trials? I'll ask the doctor about this. But for now I'm staying away from bisphosphonates. I'm just too afraid and besides I don't want injections of a year's worth of bisphosphonate medication. Thanks for asking about me.

Hi Taape: The clinical trials were completed already on Denosumab. They still have to do the post marketing surveillance *if* the FDA approves it. A new drug application is usually the last step before a drug is sold to the public. Who knows if the FDA will give the approval, but at least it isn't a bisphosphonate. It does have side effects like everything else, the main ones are infections, but very few were documented in the trial. Denosumab works on a protein that osteoclasts need to break down bone, so it stops that process allowing osteoblasts to build new bone. If approved it would be a twice yearly injection.
Good luck with your appointment, and you may want to ask the Dr what the difference is between monoclonal antibodies (denosumab) and bisphos's.

Wow, I was just reading this post and googled it because I thought I recognized the name. It is the same drug that has been used in trials for systemic mastocytosis, the rare disease that I have. I read that Denosumab Helps Build Bone Mass in Postmenopausal Women With Low Bone Mass with fewer side effects than biphosphonates. My osteoporosis is likely due mostly to my disease. I did not realize that the drug was being used for increasing bone density - I thought it was being used for other severe issues of mastocytosis. If anyone wants more info, you or I can check on the mastocytosis sites.
