View Full Version : TMJ...or not!

I'm extremely excited and I tought I'd share this with you guys and maybe give some of you a new perspective... This morning I went to my dentist because I've read a lot about TMJ and I've know for years that my jaw isn't right. Because I'm not working right now I decided to go see if my problems could be jaw-related. After the usual tests, he determined that my jaw is slightly off but that the problem is not there. Disappointment! But he continued asking some questions like if my neck was stiff. It is. I told all the doctors that I saw so far that it is painful. Well surprise surprise, he used to be a physiotherapist before he became a dentist and he performed a little test on me to check something he suspected... He lifted one of my arm way up in the air (I was sitting) and he was checking my pulse in my neck at the same time. Well would you believe it, I passed out! Because he no longer practices physio, he told me to get a refferal because the problem is in my neck! Yes! He says that either my muscles are too tight or I have a disk problem (all this to be determined by X-Rays) which restricts the blood flow to my head which explains why I feel like I'm going to pass out when I move around too much. This simple test proved it. I will keep you all posted on how it goes from here. I thought maybe some of you would want to get that checked especially if you have neck pain but also because a lot of us are always wondering if we have been correctly diagnosed...

Hey Yahoo,

That's great news! What a stroke of luck that your dentist used to be a physio!!!! I think people often don't think of the back/neck/jaw as it seems so unlikely - I know I dismissed the jaw stuff when my dentist first suggested it could be what's causing my probs. Now I realise how very lucky I was that she brought up TMJD - my otologist never did - I could've wandered around for yrs not knowing what was wrong.

Hope this is the beginning of the road to a speedy recovery for you.

hi yahoo82
hopefully you have found the answer .
this happened to my husbands cousin. she had vertigo and bad headaches. she had 2 mri's showed nothing but the xray showed up the problem. now she is managing so much better. and the xrays came about because she went to a&e . not because her doctor requested them for her.
also she had to pay privately for the mri's.
good luck
brina

Thank you all for your kind words! I'll let you know how this goes and what kind of results I'm getting from physiotherapy. Yes indeed, I was very lucky that my dentist used to be a physiotherapist. What are the odds of that?! Well I guess my prayers have been answered and I hope this will rectify the problem. My spirits have definitely been lifted even though this is one of the worst period I've been through so far. The dizziness and lightheadedness are at their worst now but I know I'll get help soon. Most of all, I now know what I have for sure. Take care guys and I'll keep you posted. Célinexx
