I am a 48 yr old Certified Public Accountant who paid for a private disablity policy for 15+ years. Since it was an insurance trust, we would receive a refund at the end of the year with a K-1 to be put on our taxes.(Does it sound like it is all about the bottom line?)
I had a birth defect called a chiari malformation that I had to have brain surgery on in Sept 03, and again in April 04. While in recovery I had an undetected a/v (like an anuerism) malformation that ruptured and flooded my brain with blood. It bled into my motor strip and they gave me little hope for survival. If I did suvive, they gave me little hope for being no better than a vegetable and spending my life in a hospital bed in my sunroom in diapers. I was totally paralyzed on my right side. I worked very hard through year of physical, occupational and speech therapies to recover. I am still in a wheelchair, but I can walk with the use of an afo for short distances. The reason that I am saying all of this is because if any one is truly disabled it is me!!!
Needless to say, I had no trouble getting SSI, but Prudential is another story. They have harrassed me relentlessly. I guess I should have just wasted away in that hospital bed in my sunroom in my diapers. I have a small tax practice out of my home because I suffer from seizures.
I have had to spend 2500 on a lawyer to fight them, after they paid me 2000 they cut me off again because I made $94.25 too much money and they wanted me to prove my expenses when I restated my Profit and Loss statement. Once they were satified that I was not "lying" on the financial end, they wanted to re-review my "medical status". When I asked them what could have changed in three months, they said they just wanted to keep their records "current". So I had to pay to get my medical records again, and now it is in limbo being seen by their "Neurological" specialist. In the meantime, I am without my money for at least 6 months. Not only that, but I received a notice for 6 months premiums!!!
