Hi,

I have been researching foot Dr's for my second opinion. And Dr. Schon is covered under my insurance and he seems to be highly qualified. Or more so than my podiatrist. I know you recommended him. But did you like him? His work? Anymore input would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, Shannon

Hello, I am also looking at going to see Dr. Schon in Baltimore. I have not seen him yet but all I can recommend is calling to schedule your appointment now. I called last week and the earliest appointment he had was the end of April. I was shocked, so maybe he is that good. Best of luck to you, let me know what you think of him also.
Thanks.

WOW,

I don't know if I want to wait that long for a second opinion. I wondered if there would be a long wait to see him. I am still waiting on a new referral so I can go out.

Thanks, Shannon

Hi all,
I am a patient of Dr. Schon's. The first time it took me three months to get in to see him, but it was worth the wait, my regular orthopedic surgeon sent me to him and said that if he had something wrong that is who he would go too. He is usually very busy, so plan to spend some time waiting. He is very though, usually a PA will get your history, determine if you need to get Xrays before he sees you, etc. I have had two surgeries with him and am know (unfortunately) seeing him for an unrelated issue. I think once you are a patient it is easier to get an appt. Good Luck

hey Shannon,
In the same office is Dr. Guyton. Even though he has not been practicing as long he is one of the best as well. I wend to him because I wanted a second opinion and I knew right away I trusted him more than my other doctor. He may have a bit of a wait for an appointment but maybe not quite as long and if you explain that it's somewhat of a rush thing they might be able to fit you in sooner. One thing that bothers me, and I'm pretty sure you would get this with either of them...is that they have residents who come in first and ask you all these questions but usually don't know what they are doing so you end up repeating it all again to him, but it's worth it. Good Luck!!!!

It's so crazy to be so excited about going to a Dr. But I finally got my referral out and I have an appointment with Dr. Guyton next Wednesday. I am just praying he can tell me what is wrong with my foot or give me some relief. Now sit and wait till next week. It's going to be hard. I am trying to not get my hopes up to high, but it's hard. I did research and found that Dr. Guyton and Dr. Miller seem to be really good Dr's too. I think Dr. Schon is so popular that is why it's hard to get an earlier appt. I can't help to think too, if one of these Dr's is stumped on what is wrong with my foot then they would consult each other in the practice. Now it's just finding the practice. Might have to take a road trip this week to make sure I can find it. hehe I'll update next week.

Hi BUNIONPAIN,

I went to see Dr. Guyton yesterday. You will first see an intern. I saw Ryan. The office seems very busy. I think I was in exam room 19 and thought to myself this place has alot of exam rooms. I felt like things we're rushed along. Dr. Guyton finally came in and looked at my x-rays and MRI films. He said I have 2nd metatarsal overload syndrome. He asked what kind of support I had in my shoes, so I showed him. He said I would really benefit from custom orthotics. Long story short, I really did not want to have to buy custom orthotics. They cost so much money and I have heard of to many people having problems with them. I guess you'd say I was rather disappointed. I was hoping they could do more for me to get rid of this pain. He also brought up the issue of my weight. Yes, I know I need to lose some weight. But I have plantars fasciitis in my left heel and the ball of my right foot hurts and swells. So I stopped walking a while back to get my feet to calm down and stop hurting. When I do spend to much time on my feet, they are throbbing the next few days.

Dr. Guyton seems like a nice guy. But to tell you the truth, I only spent maybe 5-10 minute with him tops. He said that surgery should NOT be considered at this point. I guess I almost felt like I was wasting his time by being there, since I am not a "surgical patient". Do you know what I mean? That is what he does, surgery. I just wanted a second opinion on what was going wrong with my foot and since he is a top foot and ankle specialist I thought I would benefit from him. He asked if I would like to speak to the person who makes the orthotics, while there. But I was to upset to think straight, I did not. Now I wish I did. After we left and started driving home I got to thinking about what I need to do to make my feet better. So I have decided to get the orthotics and keep my fingers crossed that they help my feet. I also found a gym locally for women that has a daycare program. That was part of my problem with exercising. I am a stay at home mom and we just moved to MD, so I don't know many people. So I will get the orthotics and lose some weight and see what happens from there. But Dr Guyton didn't say anything about me continuing to ice my feet or going to Physical therapy. I feel like he said get orthotics and sent me on my way. So I would recommend make sure you ask lots of questions and don't let them leave till you are satisfied. I hope your appt goes well. Like I said I think I was hoping for something other than orthotics and that is why I am so disappointed.

Woods5- Try to find a gym that has an indoor pool, and offers Water Aerobics.
This type of exercise really helped me to both lose weight as well as keep me in shape when my ankle was inflamed. The added plus to this type of class, is that you put very little weight on your feet and you get an awesome workout !
Good Luck!

Hi Shannon,
I know where you are coming from because it feels like you are starting all over. This group is not know for jumping into surgery and does try all conservative measures first. I have posted to you before and I am a patient of Dr. Schon's. It is a very busy office and you can wait for a long time. If you still have questions you could call the office and leave a message for Ryan to call you back,it is sometimes hard to take in everything they are saying, especially if it is not what you expected and remember to ask your questions too. I know that after the second ankle surgery I had, my gait must have changed as I got PF and they made me orthodics, they do help and I could not do without them most of the time. Yes, they are expensive and I have paid up to 450dollars for them, but can't live without them. My first set was made by the people that Union memorial uses, and the second set was done by who my local podatrist uses. If the ice feels good then I would still use it. I would get the orthodics and give them a chance. If they work, it will be great and in the scheme of things it is a small price to pay for relieving your pain. If they don't work then you need to go back to the doctor and tell him that they are not working and what else can they do. The first time I saw Dr. Schon for my ankle, I had been seeing an Ortho. doctor for about 9 months, then waited two months to see Doctor Schon and he tried all the conservative mesasures (ESWT and shots) that the other doctor had not tried and then we moved to surgery, so it was at least 5 months before he did surgery. Good luck and call the office if you have questions, you are the patient and I know that it can feel like a bit of an assembly line in the office, but stand your ground. (Write out your questions before you call, so when they call you back, you are ready. Good Luck

Thank you Nancy for your kind words. I finally got in to get my orthotics made yesterday, so I should have them in about a week. Deep down I don't think there going to help, but I also have high hopes that they will make me feet feel better. At this point I am willing to do anything. The cortisone has worn off of my plantars fasciitis heel and so I am back to double the pain.

There was a segment on "the Doctors" TV show yesterday about Plantar Fasciitis. Ther is a new treatment for it - shockwave therapy. You might look into that. It seemed to help the woman they did it on.
