View Full Version : Nausea and dizziness

I have been dizzy for 2 weeks straight. I thought it was from a hit to the head, but I had had a few dizzy spells prior to me hitting my head.
Anyway, I went to the doctor and she thought it may be a inner ear infection. She said my right ear was a bit red inside. My ears do feel a bit "poping" when I talk.
I am dizzy (but not veritgo), it is like my eyes can't keep up with what I am looking at. Everything seems to be moving to fast for me to look at. It feels like my eyes are crossing too. I feel very off balanced too, every step I take I am aware of. I feel like I could fall over.
Plus I'm pretty darn nauseous. I am not sure if it is related to this or if I have some weird stomach virus also. But I just feel awful and I don't know what to do. I'm taking some lame ear drops that have cortisone and an antibiotic in them. I don't think they really get in my ear far enough to do any good. I have been taking Gravol when I feel really nauseous.
What can I do to stop this from continuing?

Without getting too technical, your balance is maintained by three separate senses: 1) vestibular (inner ear); 2)vision; and 3)somatosensory. When all three give the brain the same info, we're fine. When one sense gives info conflicting with the other two, we get dizzy or off-balance. Without a whole lot of additional information it's hard to be specific in your case, but it sounds like it could be your vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) that is out of sync. In many cases, the system self adjusts in time. Other times, vestibular therapy is very helpful in adjusting the VOR. But first things first. Have you seen an ear, nose, and throat specialist, or otologist or neurotologist? They will probably recommend getting an ENG (electronystagmography) which can test the coordination of the three systems I mentioned. Try to find some one who does VNG (videonystagmography). This is the same basic test as ENG, only it uses an infrared camera instead of electrodes to record test responses, and can often be more sensitive to certain conditions. Good luck. Let me know what you find out.

Hi Tashca - well that was the very same I my symptoms - which were related to an inner ear problem. Like the previous post said it is probably worth seeing an ENT consultant to get a proper diagnosis. Although your doctor is very likely correct - 'in most cases this 'dizzy/eye thing sorts itself out'. You may wish to post another new subject for the attention of 'Subs30' he is a wealth of info links and reassuring words on this subject and will help put your mind at rest. Good Luck - read through the other posts and you'll soon see that you are not alone.
