Please bare with me as i explain.Going on 2 weeks now my 10 yr son is having problems with constipation.I put him on citrucel 2x a day,he still wasnt going.I bought him a Pedia Lax enema, but he cant retain it because he says when i squeeze the bottle it causes pressure on him to go.Took him to the docs, doc said to give him supposotories.Tried that 3 times in one day,he went but only hard like little bullets.Read about chlorophyll online tried it once he went just a bit more, but then complained he couldnt go anymore.Gave him couple more doses nothing happened.Tried prune juice ,it made him go but watery.Tried to get him to drink another cup of prune juice but he said it made him feel sick.Tried warm water ememas, still no real relief. He was out of school last week for 2 days because of constipation.Even the prescription suppositories the the doctor prescribed helped very little. The doctor said if the suppositories dont work he will have to have a cat scan.Im afraid he might be developing ibs like me his momma.Hes afraid to ride on the bus because if hes gets a cramp from all the stuff we been using ,he will have to go on the bus.Needless to say helping him cope with this problem isnt helping my ibs problem.Does anyone out there have any other ideas or suggestions what i can do.He cant be out of school any longer. All ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.Thankyou.:(

suzyshop1,
I feel for your son. Constipation can make you feel so bad. What about his diet? I know kids don't always eat right. Here are some natural things that might help---Raisens, oatmeal ( I would make him some cookies so that you control how much is in them ) this won't seem like a medicine to him and it might help. Lots of water, I don't like prune juice but there are flavored prunes (lemon and orange) that I absolutely love and I think kids would too. They are made by Sunsweet. Alot of fiber and water are very helpful. I also get Unprocessed Bran at the health food store--you can add some to anything that has a liquid base and you don't even notice it. I even put it in my mashed potatoes. For a child I wouldn't give him more than about a teaspoon at a time in some food.
Hope this helps. precious49

maybe you could try Miralax? I have used it before for constipation and it worked for me, overall I've heard good reviews about it. Good luck!

I been continuning with the citrucel 2x a day.Hes been eating raisins, and last night i gave him a bowl of oatmeal. This morning he still cant go.I cant keep taking him out of school. It seems like to me the more fiber hes eating the more he cant go,hes starting to hate going to school.I dont want bowel problems to wreck his life ,like it did mine.Ive had ibs c&d kind since i was 17 im now 52.Ibs has pretty much ruled my life.I dont want to see him go thru the pain and misery that i have.I guess what im really afraid of is him having to go thru the barium enema test.I went thru that and to this day i can remember how horrible it was for me.If my son cant hold a childs saline laxative in a small bottle in,how in the world is he going to hold in that nasty stuff they pump in your bowel long enough for them to take xrays.Anymore suggestions anyone?Anyone Thanks for any replies.:(

suzyshop1,
You are doing all of the right things to help. I know that this is horrible for you. I would rather it be me than my child suffering and I'm sure you feel the same. And yes, that barium test is not fun at all. And especially for a child. The only other thing that I can think of is taking olive oil. I do that sometimes. You might ask your Dr. about giving him CoLyte in a laxative way. My colon Dr. said that I could use it and when all else fails--it has always worked for me. I just put a tablespoon of the CoLyte in 8 oz. of water and drink it down. It doesn't taste as bad as when it is full strength--like when you're having to do prep for a colonoscopy. I will be praying for your son and you. precious49 God Bless You and Yours Today and EveryDay

My suggestion is for him to take 2 cleanse more a day> I used to have severe constipation and nothing natural would help but I did not want to take anything to harsh and have my bowels addicted. Anyways might be worth a try it is by renewlife.

Fibers can be the problem. In our family, we can't eat fibers with our IBS. So the doctor cut our most of the fibers in our diets. So no beans, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, whole wheats, dairy or any breads.
When my son gets in trouble with bowel problems, I just give him water crackers with dairy free cream cheese. Applesauce and easy to digest foods. Lots of water to drink, not too cold. No sugar products, they can cause lots of problems too.
I would suggest to find a good gastroenterologist. They will know that lots of IBS people can't eat fibers. The more fibers you put in, the harder the bowel gets. That hurts.
I am sorry your son has to go through these problems.
Good luck, I will keep you in my thoughts.
