Hi everyone,
I had a stool sample done a few months ago and it revealed I had an overgrowth of the bacteria pseudomonas aeurginosa. I have had digestive issues, some food allergies, white furry tongue, and mouth sores.

The stool sample ruled out candida and parasites.
I have taken some herbal antibiotics that the stool sample said the bacteria is sensitive to..but I think I still have the infection.

I'm worried about taking the heavy duty antibiotics for the infection..for fear of candida or other bacteria.

Has anyone ever had any experience with this or other bacteria?
thanks for your help!

Hello. I had an aeromonas hydrophilia infection from India - a very similar bacteria to yours. I took some herbs (golden seal, grapefruit seed extract, the usual suspects..) and hoped that they worked, but my symptoms continued. I then took ciprofloxacin and that made no difference to my symptoms (it later turned out my symptoms were caused by a functional digestive disorder) but the reason I'm writing this is because 1. The anti-biotics didn't effect any kind of yeast overgrowth or allow parasites to thrive even though I had a bacterial infection, because I took heavy duty (500 billion) probiotics after it (it's called VSL 3 if you're interested) and 2. The cipro or the herbs killed the aeromonas hydrophilia, but it wasn't that which was giving me the symptoms in the first place. I imagine you had one of those comprehensive stool tests done (I did too) where they find rare bacteria that a normal GI doctor wouldn't check for. As that bacteria is not considered as harmful as others, it's surprisingly easy to get rid of, so think twice before you decide it's the root of all your problems. All the best

Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply! I have been searching for information like this. What is a functional digestive disorder...was it caused by the bacteria? Have you been able to treat it. What kind of dr. have you seen for this? I can't find much on the internet about this. Did taking the strong probiotics help? Where can I get those probiotics? How long did it take to get rid of? Thank you SO much! I truly appreciate your response.

Hi tcmalt,

The probiotic VSL3 is discussed on the IBS board -- a sticky thread at the top of the page and is used to treat IBS symptoms as well as ulcerated colitis.

You can buy VSL#3 online -- it contains 8 probiotic culture strains and is very potent.

thank you Harry! ...I will try that. I have had this for 6 mos...it seems to be getting better...but it has not been a fast recovery. Do you know anymore about bacterial overgrowth in the digestive system?

tcmalt,

I think if you have an intestinal infection-- you should take the antibiotic that get rid of it as fast as you can so that it does not spread and become systemic and really mess up your immune system so that your system can't respond to a worse infection.

You may just run out of antibiotics that can treat or cure the infection.

I would go to an Infectious Desease Doctor to be treated.

Hi so sorry i didn't get back to you until now, you forget to check the threads again. I wouldn't say my problem has gone, but I'd say it has gotten better over the past couple of years. Now for your questions: 1. a functional digestive disorder is where a part of your digestive system works abnormally, but there is nothing actually wrong or malignant there. So when you get bacterial infections, they sometimes affect your system so much that some part of it decides to create an abnormality. For me, my bacterial infection with aeromonas caused a disorder called gastroparesis, where my stomach and intestines don't pass food along in a normal way, therefore giving me bloating, contipation, persistent nausea and vomiting. The irony is that there was/is nothing wrong with me, yet my digestive system just misbehaves and makes my life very difficult and uncomfortable, affects my personal life and my job. 2. I've found over time, once I got rid of the bacterial infection, the horrible symtpoms began to go away (haven't gone yet), but they still come back occasionally. ie, I find I have longer periods of time with no problems. 3. Gastroenterologists have been useless in helping me with the problems. If there's nothing morbid going on with you (ie something they should remove, or something literally eating your flesh. And they especially don't consider the types of bacterial infection we have/had as morbid, or even harmful) they tell you it's IBS and pack you off, even if you have some horrible symptoms. I have had to self-treat with diet changes, relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy, herbs, anti-nausea tablets, hot water bottles, making sure I know where toilets are wherever I go, planning my outings far in advance, and it STILL hasn;t gone! 4. The strong pro-biotics I think will really help you. They're quite expensive but the contain the MOST good bacteria over any other probiotic.
all the best
