Using a condom will not necessarily protect you from getting, or spreading, HPV. HPV is contracted through skin to skin contact. If an area unprotected by the condom comes in contact with an infected area of HPV you can contract it. Recent studies show 25% of oral cancers of HPV related so that brings oral sex into question. Some research I have read even suggests that touching an affected area with your hands can transit HPV. I supposed that may have a lot to do with what or where you put your hand afterwards but the study was not clear on that. So, protected sex will not prevent HPV but it doesn't hurt to eliminate as much exposed skin tissue as possible then either.
