Hello

My specialist says that I have some renal impairment
My blood tests show urea 12.1 a creatine of 106 giving an estimated GFR of 47mls a minute.
CRP was,8 with an ESR of 18
CPK was elevated at 346

I am a 67 yr old female and two yrs ago had a TIA, with full recovery
I have also been diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, my steroids are now being gradually reduced.
I also have osteo arthritis and suffer from cramps in my hands.
I am on tablets to reduce blood pressure and also take 75mcgs of Levothyroxine daily.

I was just a little concerned about the suggestion that I have some renal impairment and can anyone inform me what the blood test results mean please.

Thank you for any advice

Dorritt

Hi,

I am certainly not in expert in all the details about your bloodwork, even though I have suffered kidney failure due to malignant hypertension.

The one factor I am familiar with is your "GFR", which roughly represents the percentage of kidney function. It is used, along with the other results to figure out at what percentage your kidney/kidneys are working.

Just so you know, in some cases the GFR can be increased, using medication, diet and BP control. Mine got down to a 17, and in five years has climbed back up to almost 40.

Dorritt,

Are you under the care of a nephrologist, the kidney specialist?

No, I see a Rheumatologist, I saw him on 2nd December 2008, when he informed me of the results of my blood tests, he has repeated blood tests and I see him again in March, he sent a letter to my GP and a copy to me, in which he has asked my GP to monitor my renal function.
I am having a blood test at my GP's on Friday 23rd January for renal function.
