I suggest you read the information at the Center for Disease Control. They have a lot of great information on HPV. I *think* they have info on the LEEP, too. I don't have time to give a long answer right now. Perhaps someone else will come in an be able to give you more info than I can give right now.

I am just learning about all this myself, but the one thing I would tell you is to make sure your doctor takes this seriously, and make sure to have follow up paps FREQUENTLY. My doctor said once a year was fine, but that wasn't the best advice. I have since learned that a lot of doctors will repeat the pap every three months for the first year or two after the first pap that shows it, and that's what I would insist on. Also, if you have two in a row that show the high risk HPV, I would talk to my doctor about doing a colposcopy so they can examine you better, and maybe even do a biopsy and/or an ECC to check higher up for abnormalities. I'm not trying to scare you, but I received my first abnormal pap in May 2008, which showed high risk HPV. By November I had abnormal cells -- and I only found that out because I went to the doctor due to a possible miscarriage. I had the colpo in December, found out last week that I had adenocarcinoma in situ -- the highest level of precancer -- and had surgery this past Thursday.

Again, I'm not trying to scare you, but I really wish someone had watched me more closely and had told me that this hr HPV is something to keep a very close eye on. Pickle Eyes here is awesome, and her story is very similar to mine -- that a real problem came on VERY quickly. There is supposedly a very low risk of having what I had, something like 1 in 10,000 -- but somebody has to be that one person, and I hope that as many people as possible can catch it before it ever gets serious. Hope this helps.

You didn't mention just where you have HPV and what area the LEEP (Loop electrosurgical excision procedure). After the LEEP procedure, if it is done for cervical HPV it is advisable to obstain from sex, from lifting heavy objects, douching, taking tub baths and using tampons. After the procedure a pain reliever may be needed and some bleeding may occur. Should you develop any symptoms of fever, severe pain or other symptoms of infection you should contact your doctor immediately.

Zoe thanks ever so much for replying to my question, I am sorry to learn that you also have this and hope you get through it. Like yourself this has happened so fast I had an examination from my own doctor in Nov 08 which exrtemely concerned her to which I was sent an appointment for colposcopywithin a week. I attended this and was informed by the colposcopist that she will be taking a biopsy from my cervix, I then waited 4 weeks for my results which where abnormal and had the LEEP procedure done on fri 15 jan 09. nobody has enlightened me about what all this means I have had to search the internet for information which has terrified me. High Grade HPV I know now is bad but I dont know what will happen in terms of will I/wont I develop cancer and I wont know untill results come back in a few weeks. if you have any more info for me I would be gratful if you could pass it on, thanks again and take care.

Njd, I hope you are recovering well. Personally, I call my doctor's office at 4 or 5 days post-procedure to see if the results are in. It helps me not feel so anxious knowing earlier than I'd know if I had to wait for them to call.

Do you know what type of dysplasia you had (squamous cell or glandular/columnar cell)? Do you know how many biopsies were taken during your colpo?

Like I said, I hope you are healing well!

hi Pickle eyes, thanks for replying. I haven't been told anything in terms of diagnosis all's I was told in the hospital room after the LEEP was that they would write to me in 4 weeks with results and gave me a print out which said i have high grade HPV. I had the biopsy just over a month before this and they took 3 samples which came back abnormal. I didnt think much of it at the time as all I wanted to do was go home. I looked at the print out again when I got home and looked up HPV on the computer to which I was extremely shocked by how severe this could be and that the doctor didnt even explain this to me. I really appreciate you giving me more info Pickle thanks again. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF XXXX

You have a right to copies of the pathology reports, so if that report doesn't say whether they were squamous or glandular/columnar, then call the doctor's office back and request a copy. It is important to know which type of atypical cells you have.

When are you scheduled to go back to the doctor?

To prevent ovarian cancer, you can have your cells frozen. There is a gardicil shot you can get also.

NJD, hopefully this will be a wake up call for your doc to get more informed about HPV.
