im 19 and live in UK, not much sun exposure or history of sun burn. im quite pale. anyway i have a freckle on my finger, is quite dark, always has been but i noticed that it has turned a little darker in the middle like 1mm or 0.8mm. sound normal? should i wait a week or two before getting checked out?

i have had worries like this before about a freckle on my arm, but i told myself to wait a month or two and check for any changes and nothing changed, no itching or anything so i got over that. i do admit i worry alot about my health but everything always turns out ok.

sick of worrying! :(

go to the doctor and have it checked out. You're right. You cannot worry about everything or you will drive yourself crazy. But if it worries you, then definitely get it checked out and ask your physician what to look for or what you should be concerned about.

I had a mole. It was there for over a year. The only thing that I thought was strange about it was that it itched. I guess it looked a bit darker than any of my other moles, but I don't tend to worry. Then it turned out to be melanoma. There has to be a happy medium about concern and lack of concern (on my part) and I WILL go to see a dermatologist, but I WILL NOT worry about every mole that *I* might think looks different than the others.

I hope that helps you, hon. Take care!!

im going to make an appointment tomorrow just to be sure, better safe than sorry. but if he tells me its nothing to worry about then i guess i better explain my irrational fear with my health. ive thought about telling my doctor before but im just so relieved every time he tells me nothing is wrong that i think its not a problem.

every time i suspect something is wrong (brain tumor, aneurysm, kidney/liver disease, thyroid, skin cancer, heart problems, septicemia) i am UTTERLY convinced that THIS is the real thing, and i think to myself, if i can just make sure that its nothing serious, then i wont worry again, i promise. then 3 or 4 weeks later, when im feeling better, something else pops up, and i think to myself, "this is definitely cause for concern. THIS is definitely worrying." then it turns out to be nothing. i cant help this way of thinking.

theres no itching, or raised, thats why i was unsure if its a mole or freckle. i know moles darken and appear up until your 20's and im 19, but im still worried.

thank you for the reply. x

I'll always be a part of this board now since Chele was so kind to respond to my ?'s. So please keep me and others posted about what your doctor may or not find. I care as I can see that others on this board care as well.

Good luck!!

my appointment with my GP is today. im really scared :(

*EDIT*

my GP says it looks normal to him and has no warning signs of melanoma, none of the signs he would look for or has seen on melanoma. he referred me to a dermatologist because he said "he knows some people do not take their doctors opinions as confirmation they are fine". i think its because i was in tears ha, he said the dermatologist will probably tell me that its fine also, but just to be sure :)

i have recently just changed surgeries because my last one was rubbish, so i went to my new DR thinking he'd say it was fine and stop worrying, i didnt expect this :)

I don't mean to instill more fear or concern, but if you are at all uneasy about something relating to your health please do not hesitate to see your doctor about it. It doesn't have to be life-threatening, but it could very well be something that needs to be looked at. Or it could be nothing. Getting a doctor's opinion is always worth the peace of mind.

As to melanoma, please keep in mind that melanoma does not have to itch or even be raised. Typically, there are certain characteristics of melanoma (the ABCDE's), but not all are present. And note: itching is not a characteristic, although it might be.

Be thankful your doctor has referred you to a dermatologist. There are doctors that do not take patient's concerns seriously. Hopefully this is simply a mole, but having it checked by a dermatologist is best.
