How quickly you forget what you went through on the first foot. Today I find myself 6 weeks post op and in a walking boot beginning my walking again and I find myself very nervous and overly cautious. How long did everyone else here need the crutches as training wheels once you were able to start walking in the boot?

I was not crutch free until 9 weeks. I had a hard time with the first steps and I took my time. I will be having surgery on my second foot too. Some say it's better cause you know what to expect but I am sure there are things you "forget" and things that can be different the second time around. Hang in there.

I was PWB with 2 crutches for a week then with one crutch for a week so was totally "crutchless" by the end of eight weeks but still used a cane now and then on days when I felt kind of shaky or weak.

Hi
I took a lot longer to be totally crutch-free all the time. My heel and outside of my foot are having that over-sympathetic nervous response-shooting pain. Having not felt the surgery or this stupid nerve thing, it took me a while to accept that my foot was fine and could/would support me. The tingly-shooting pain was pretty intense. I would fall back on crutches whenever it got to much- or if I had to walk long distances in a short amount of time at work. I was finally coming to work without crutches for back-up at about week 11. I still have the stupid nerve thing, although it is much better. May recovery come quickly.

Ladies -
I rocked a WHEELCHAIR for all 6 cast weeks and fell back on it for a couple more in the boot! Crutches just never felt comfortable - both from balance and from added stress on the good foot. Weenie Central!
As for the boot - he didn't release me for NWB for a couple of weeks into that and I had it on for a total of 8 wks. By then I was off the crutches but back on after I was in a shoe if I was tired. Such a long stretch.
The thing to remember - at least for me - is that once you start walking and standing and wearing shoes and going to PT and just getting on with it.... EVERY DAY it gets better! Sometimes I still think, "Hey! I've been at this for hours and I'm OKAY!"
There's a time and place for Weenies.... this be it!!!! M
