View Full Version : Neuropathy caused by bp medications

I began to have some numbness in my feet after I had been on a calcium channel blocker for a while---this was about 6 years ago----I have found various references which say that it is a small side effect, but indeed peripheral neuropathy can be a side effect of calcium channel blockers. I wish I had found this relationship sooner.

For a variety of reasons, I fired my first doctor and got off the ccb and onto a different bp med which works very well.

Does anyone have any experience with the amount of time it could take to reverse the neuropathy in the bottom of my feet. I don't have pain, and I can walk a couple of miles a day. But it is annoying to have these weird sensations in the bottom of my feet. I have been off the old med and on the new for a couple of months now.

Hi, the peripheral nerves are capable of growing back as long as they haven't got cell death, they are extreemly slow at regenerating, growing back at 1mm per day if under perfect conditions, please be aware though whilst they are repairing they desperatly try to make connection, you can get flaring of symptoms but this process eventually settles down in time, can be months to years depends on how much damage there is.
Mine PN was my feet and up my legs and it took 5 years to completely get rid of all damage completly, the numbess took the longest.

Its an individual choice but i am sure some supplements helped my nerves repair, they were a multi B vitamin every day, 1 mg- B12 methylcobalamin on an empty stomache every day, R lipioc acid 100 mg daily, b1 100 mg x 3 times a day, GLA [gamma linolic acid] 240 mg x2, Acetyl-L-carnitine & fish oil.
They all have a purpose if you research them.
best of luck anyway
Aussie :)

Thanks for the input. I do take and have taken for years B12, B complex, B6, fish oil,
multi vitamins, calcium, etc etc.
The strange thing is that nothing has gotten much better, but nothing has gotten worse, either.
The pharmacist said it could take some months to see healing.
I am just really interested in what other people have discovered in their own lives
if they think the neuropathy was caused by an outside agent i.e. a medication.
thanks for the input

Are you also aware that too much B6 can cause neuropathy?

Vitamin B6 is usually safe, at intakes up to 200 mg per day in adults. However, vitamin B6 can cause neurological disorders, such as loss of sensation in legs and imbalance, when taken in high doses (200 mg or more per day) over a long period of time. Vitamin B6 toxicity can damage sensory nerves, leading to numbness in the hands and feet as well as difficulty walking. Symptoms of a pyridoxine overdose may include poor coordination, staggering, numbness, decreased sensation to touch, temperature, and vibration,; and tiredness for up to six months. Once this vitamin is regulated or stopped the neuropathy should get better.

I always have stayed clear of the normal B6 because of the possible toxic affect of the normal Vit B6, i just relied on the amount that's already in the multi B supplement, but if i was to use it seperatly i would only use the active form of B6- P5P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate).

The B6 tablets I have taken have 100mg of B6 and I noticed the multi has 2 mg and the B-complex has 2mg.
I got numbness before I ever took B6 which I started taking because it supposedly helps with edema and I cannot remember what else. Interesting, though. I will have to do some more research. Thanks for the input

Hi Everyone,
This is an interesting idea...I've been taking Toprol XL for 4 years, now have horrible neuropathy in feet and hands. We don't know what it's from yet, if we ever find out. Can't get off the meds though, so what can you do?
