heart attack when your bp is almost always perfect and cholesterol at last test was perfect? 5 years ago, my hdl and ldl were at perfect levels. My bp always runs on the mark or a bit below.....Usually 120/70.
I'm 43, overweight and smoke about 5-8 cigarettes a day. A lot of stress in my life.
I was told I've had a "past" H/A by way of ekg. I'm due for an echo next week. I would really appreciate a response because I'am confused. Thank you!

Hi Kim, Blood pressure and cholesterol are just two of many factors that can be associated with heart attacks. The most important factors are family history (ie a genetic factor) and smoking. If you are in a high risk group, and it sounds like you might be - by continuing to smoke - even lightly, and having a stressful lifestyle, (and to a lesser extent being overweight) there is that chance. Carefully managing your blood pressure and cholesterol alone may not help. You need to look at the whole picture.
I would suggest tackling the smoking as first priority. If you can't beat it yourself get help. I used hypnotism, and it was the best thing I did to turn my lifestyle around.
The stress can only be managed by you making changes to take time out - by that I mean time for RELAXATION. Exercise is another way of relaxing and creating a relaxed mind. It's such a great feeling to workout, walk, ride a bike or whatever, puff a bit, get the heart rate moving - and then to sit down and RELAX. Every problem can be diminished in your mind by exercising then sitting and relaxing - taking time out.
Hope this helps in some way Kim,
Beefy
(There are plenty of good yoga, meditation and relaxation DVDs around - can be picked up for a few $$ - buy 3 or 4 - find one you like - that can make a start.)

Bless your heart for responding! I really REALLY appreciate it. Okay, yes, the obvious is put those stinking cigarettes away for good. If I can get it down to five a day, why can't I just quit???????? Yes, the ever nagging question. Stress, thats why. Family issues at the moment are so bad that if I didn't smoke, I'd drink! lol Just kidding :) Upcoming week is going to be a monumentally difficult one, the young ones in my family have to testify in a CSC trial. My echo is on Wednesday, I hope to know more then and be ready to tackle MY health. That is the major problem, I take care of everyone else, and don't take care of myself. Again, I so appreciate you taking the time to explain. Very kind.
