why do surgeons sometimes lower body temperature during heart operation?

It lowers the body's requirement for oxygen, particularly the brain. This in turn lowers the blood flow through the heart-lung machine required for oxygenation.
They reduced my body temperature during a 6 bypass operation, but I wasn't aware of it.
