I wanted to know if anyone else has had allergic reactions to their bp meds? I have been on different bp meds since June 2008. I have had hives everyday since June. Can you be allergic to Benicar and Verapamil?

Yes, I had an allergic reaction to HCTZ (diuretic.) I figured out later that it was the dye (yellow dye #6 A.Lake) because I reacted to several other meds that had the dye in them. I now take HCTZ without the dye with no problems.

One can react to meds even after being on them many years according to my b/p specialist.

You need to have an injection of adrenalin (called an epi-pen) in case your throat swells. I always have one at home.

You need to get the package insert that comes with the drug so you can find out what the fillers are in the drugs. Fillers can stuff like cornstarch etc that help keep the real medicine together.

Thanks, my doctor thought I was crazy for thinking it was the meds. I went to
an allergy doctor for further testing. So after months of different allergy pills and
a week of allergy diet #1, my cardiologist finally feels it might be the meds. I was taking Benicar HCT. He then switched to Benicar and Verapamil together. I still had hives so we dropped the Benicar. Now I am just taking the Verapamil and no change on the hives.
I will do some checking on the fillers on both drugs.

Thanks for your help!
